The Wisconsin delegation had the opportunity to visit the Merck Group's global headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. Merck is a leading science and technology company that is divided into three business categories: health care, life sciences, and electronics. We started the tour by visiting the learning center where apprentices work in labs. Governor Tony Evers, WEDC Secretary Missy Hughes, and the rest of the group also had the opportunity to walk around the company's innovation center and hear about the company's history that dates back to the 17th century and the company's move to the U.S. and Wisconsin. Merck is the parent company of MilliporeSigma, which operates several locations throughout Wisconsin including Sheboygan, Madison, Verona, and Milwaukee. Merck Group has about 1,600 employees in the state, with a majority in Sheboygan. We are thrilled to see this company continue to grow in Wisconsin and across the globe.

Our time in Wiesbaden, the capital of the German state of Hessen, included a visit to a child care facility. An eager group of children welcomed Governor Tony Evers and the rest of the Wisconsin delegation. We had the chance to tour several classrooms at Kindertagesstätte Hasengarten Daycare Center. Before leaving, the governor signed a few of the students' classroom artwork to mark the occasion. The child care facility serves 70 students from more than 20 nations. Hasengarten was the first public daycare center in Wiesbaden.

The delegation in Europe is now in Hessen, Wisconsin's sister state in Germany. Governor Tony Evers, WEDC Secretary Missy Hughes, and the rest of the group had the opportunity to visit the Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen. The visit kicks off the 50 year celebration of the sister-state relationship. The JLU is a key exchange partner to the Universities of Wisconsin system. The exchange program between UW System and Hessen began in 1998, allowing students to study overseas with the support of dedicated international staff. Gov. Evers also had the opportunity to meet with two students who spent time studying in Wisconsin. Before leaving, everyone posed for a photo by a statue paying tribute to Mildred Fish-Harnack. She was born in Milwaukee and graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison before moving to Germany. Fish-Harnack and her husband formed a spy network to report the movement of Germany's air forces during WWII to the Soviet Union. Their group was captured in 1942 and sentenced to death.
