On Tuesday, February 25, Western Wisconsin Health was honored to be featured on WEAU 13 News to share how we are boldly expanding our obstetrical unit—at a time when so many hospitals in our region are shutting theirs down. In the interview, our CEO, Eilidh Pederson, and Chief Nursing Officer, Shonda Helgeson, discuss why rural obstetric care is in crisis and why we made the crucial decision to grow our services instead of scaling back. With multiple birth centers in the region closing in recent years, expecting families deserve access to high-quality care close to home. This commitment hasn’t gone unnoticed—our efforts were recently recognized with the Momentum West 2024 Top Development Award for expanding rural obstetrical services. Yesterday, Western Wisconsin Health (WWH) was honored to receive the Momentum West 2024 Top Development Project award for our obstetrical expansion project! Noted during the presentation was our unwavering dedication to preserving and expanding rural obstetrical care for the communities we serve. At a time when many rural hospitals are closing their birthing units, WWH successfully expanded to add three new OB rooms, allowing us to safely deliver a record-breaking 385 babies in 2024. This achievement was made possible thanks to our incredible team, community partners, donors, and grant funders, which contributed over $4 million of the $7.8 million project. A humble thank you to Momentum West for this recognition and congratulations to the other remarkable organizations and individuals recognized during the program: Top Redevelopment Project: Wisconsin Farmers Union Top Talent Initiative: Westfields Hospital & Northwood Technical College Young Professional: Dan Lytle, CVTC Entrepreneur of the Year: Jeremiah Gerdin
