During his visit to Newport News Shipbuilding yesterday, Office of the Secretary of the Navy John Phelan had an opportunity to participate in topside testing of the electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) on John F. Kennedy (#CVN79). In this video, Secretary Phelan – who is coincidentally the 79th secretary of the Navy – signs a “dead load” and watches it launch off the aircraft carrier's bow into the James River. The car-like structure simulates the weight of an aircraft. Once launched, it is retrieved and relaunched until testing concludes.

We proudly hosted Office of the Secretary of the Navy John Phelan at Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII, today. His visit to the shipyard covered the construction lifecycle for nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers, including conversations with the shipbuilders who are bringing them to life at NNS. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and Congressman Bobby Scott, Congressman Rob Wittman, and Congressman John McGuire joined Secretary Phelan for a portion of the visit. "Commercial technology used to follow defense technology... But now it's the exact reverse." Andy Green, executive vice president of HII and president of Mission Technologies, a division of HII, recently participated in a Q&A session with Colin Demarest of AXIOS. Learn more about what he thinks of when he hears "future of defense," whether wars will ever be waged solely by robots and the one piece of tech he can't live without by reading the Q&A below: https://lnkd.in/eiuGCcsW

HII announced the delivery of first two Lionfish small uncrewed undersea vehicles (SUUVs) to the U.S. Navy under a program that could scale to 200 vehicles, with a contract value exceeding $347 million. Lionfish is based on HII’s REMUS 300 platform, a modular, open-architecture SUUV engineered for multi-mission adaptability and the program was developed in collaboration with the U.S. Navy and Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), to accelerate the adoption of dual-use commercial technologies into U.S. Department of Defense programs. The world's largest aircraft carrier, hard at work. Take a look at this stunning shot of the NNS-built USS Gerald R. Ford (#CVN78) as it conducts a replenishment-at-sea (RAS) with the fast combat support ship USNS Supply (T-AOE-6) in the Atlantic Ocean during a replenishment-at-sea (RAS) on April 4. The Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group is underway in the Atlantic completing its Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), the Joint Force’s most complex integrated training event and prepares naval task forces for sustained high-end Joint and combined combat. Shipbuilders at Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII, have the honor of saying they built this first-in-class carrier, and as we celebrate 250 years of the US Navy in 2025, we're proud to be building the aircraft carriers our nation needs. #AmericasNavy250 📸:U.S. Navy/MCC DiMestico

Whether there's a need for combat operations or humanitarian assistance after a natural disaster, HII-built ships have everything to get the job done. Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (#LHD7), built by Ingalls Shipbuilding, a Division of HII, transits the coast of the Atlantic Ocean on March 24 while conducting advanced-phase training exercises designed to enhance warfighting readiness and interoperability at sea. LHD 7 is the flagship of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group, which is uniquely positioned to deter aggression, project power through presence abroad, and execute contingency missions with its integrated United States Marine Corps team in support of U.S. strategic interests. 💡#DidYouKnow: In the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Iwo Jima provided disaster relief and served as the region's only fully functional air field for helicopter operations; provided medical services for disaster victims; and conducted clean-up operations in the city and suburbs of New Orleans. The ship proudly served as flagship for the commander-in-chief, George W. Bush, during the Hurricane Katrina Task Force and is only the second US Navy ship to have been presented the flag of the President of the United States of America. Our shipbuilders build these ships for times when it matters most. Our shipbuilders build these ships for times when it matters most. As we celebrate 250 years of America's Navy in 2025, we'll be ready for whatever may come in the next century. #AmericasNavy250 📸: U.S. Navy/MCS Swigart

April 11 is #NationalSubmarineDay. Celebrated annually, this day commemorates the first successful voyage of USS Holland (SS-1), the U.S. Navy's first modern commissioned submarine, which took place on this day in 1900. As one of two designers and builders of nuclear-powered submarines for the U.S. Navy, Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII, proudly delivered Virginia-class submarine USS New Jersey (#SSN796), which officially entered the fleet in September 2024. Virginia-class submarine Arkansas (#SSN800) was christened at NNS in December 2024; it will be the 27th Virginia-class submarine and the 13th to be delivered by NNS. We're proud to have a dedicated team of shipbuilders who are building the world's most advanced attack submarines for our Navy in the name of national defense. As we've done for decades, it's an honor to craft these vessels that solidify our legacy in the history of maritime technology. 📸1-2: Arkansas (#SSN800) during the christening ceremony at NNS on Dec. 7, 2024 📸3: USS New Jersey (#SSN796) during sea trials in February 2024 📸4: NNS-built ballistic missile submarine USS Thomas Jefferson (SSBN 618) in 1962
