HII announced the delivery of first two Lionfish small uncrewed undersea vehicles (SUUVs) to the U.S. Navy under a program that could scale to 200 vehicles, with a contract value exceeding $347 million. Lionfish is based on HII’s REMUS 300 platform, a modular, open-architecture SUUV engineered for multi-mission adaptability and the program was developed in collaboration with the U.S. Navy and Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), to accelerate the adoption of dual-use commercial technologies into U.S. Department of Defense programs. Justin Katz of Breaking Defense was given an exclusive look at HII newest initiative, Dark Sea Labs (DSL), a technology integration office designed to connect capabilities across divisions in ways no single business unit could achieve alone. As Executive VP Eric Chewning told Breaking Defense in an interview, the goal is simple: ““[T]ake capability across the different portfolios, ..then bring that together … to solve a customer problem set that any single division couldn’t solve on its own.” From developing high-energy lasers, to enabling the U.S. Navy’s deployment of Conventional Prompt Strike weapons on Zumwalt-class destroyers, to using AI to improve shipyard productivity, to advancing launch and recovery of unmanned undersea vehicles from Navy submarines—DSL is aligning emerging technologies with mission-critical needs. At the HII booth during the Navy League of the United States' annual #SeaAirSpace2025 Global Maritime Expo, representatives from five Australian companies were presented with certificates recognizing their successful participation in HII-led supplier development initiatives and received a Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII, supplier identification number. The supplier development initiatives include state-led Supplier Capability Uplift Programs, which will feed into the new Australian Submarine Supplier Qualification (AUSSQ) program, announced by Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles on March 6, 2025. Cullen Glass, Vice President of Supply Chain Management for HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding; Michael Lempke, President of the Global Security group at Mission Technologies, a division of HII; and Eric Chewning, Executive Vice President of Strategy & Development for HII, presented certificates to: • Century Engineering Pty Ltd (South Australia) • MacTaggart Scott Australia (South Australia) • Hoffmann Engineering (Western Australia) • Levett Engineering Pty. Ltd. (South Australia) • VEEM Ltd (ASX:VEE) (Western Australia) The supplier identification number signifies that, upon full certification through the AUSSQ process, these companies are qualified to participate in the #NewportNewsShipbuilding supply chain in support of nuclear-powered submarine construction. Also in attendance were Rear Admiral Ian Murray, Australian Defence Attaché; Linda Dawson, Deputy Director General for Industry, Science and Innovation, Western Australian Government; and Sir Nick Hine, Executive Director of H&B Defence and former Second Sea Lord of the Royal Navy. This milestone reflects deepening industrial integration under the #AUKUS trilateral security partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. HII’s work, under contract with the Australian Government, supports the development of sovereign industrial capabilities and enables Australian companies to enter U.S. defense supply chains. #SAS2025
