Director Joe Nguyễn sat down with “Inside Olympia” host Austin Jenkins last week to discuss his transition from state senator to leading Commerce. He shared insights on what we're building at Commerce - and how we're focused on delivering meaningful results for communities across Washington. From housing and clean energy to tariffs and the state economy, the conversation covers some of the biggest issues facing our state. It's well worth a watch: https://lnkd.in/gkcsVWm4

We welcomed a new executive director to the Office of Homeless Youth last month. Cacey Hanauer-Sutton joined our team after more than 20 years of direct service to youth and young adults experiencing housing and behavioral health challenges. Youth homelessness declined by 40% from 2016 to 2023, even as homelessness overall has increased in the state. OHY has been instrumental in the change, and Cacey’s goal is to keep the positive momentum going. “OHY walks the walk when it comes to engaging young people and communities in decision-making. They know themselves, their needs and what works better than anyone, and OHY does the work to listen and respond,” she said. “I’ve partnered with OHY since its beginning and long admired their values, inclusive atmosphere, and dedication to ensuring that providers and young people are heard. I’m thrilled to be joining this team.” Read the full announcement: https://lnkd.in/gVS9wjmE

We send our hearty congratulations to the City Of La Center, which recently celebrated a ribbon cutting for the revamped Wheel Club Community Center! This 1960s-era building in Clark County offers programs including senior meals, art classes, and martial arts lessons. While beloved as a gathering space, it needed some updates. Commerce invested $242,500 alongside local funds. Renovations brought new windows, flooring and lighting, among other upgrades to improve the community space.

In early February, freezing temperatures and heavy snow hit the Town of Concrete in Skagit County. One key road along a school bus route quickly deteriorated with cracking and seeping. State funds are on the way to help fix the failing roadway. The Washington State Public Works Board recently announced $1.19 million in emergency funds for two projects, split between Concrete and emergency wastewater repairs in Toppenish, in the Yakima Valley. These awards support fixes for essential infrastructure, preventing further damage and disruption in communities. Read more: https://lnkd.in/g7aiAdQ4
