🏆 Shout-out to Queen Anne Elementary's the Library Lynx team for winning the 30th annual Global Reading Challenge City Final on Wednesday in front of a packed, cheering crowd at the Central Library's auditorium! And .. as we all know, all the students who participated this year are winners. Read on for the full story: https://lnkd.in/ghEg6fpV But a few tidbits: 📚 A collaboration between The Seattle Public Library and Seattle Public Schools, the Global Reading Challenge promotes recreational reading at a pivotal elementary school stage when many students — especially boys — start to lose interest in reading. 📚 More than 3,500 fourth and fifth graders in 72 SPS elementary schools participated in the program this year, forming more than 500 teams. 📚 All children who participate have access to the titles, which are chosen because they are rich, low-barrier books that reflect diverse cultural communities and have strong appeal to all kids. 📚 Students sharpen reading skills, while also learning about conflict resolution, group dynamics, and resiliency in the face of disappointment. 🎉Plus, at the City Final it's just sooooooo cool to see a crowd of hundreds cheer on kids for reading. As one parent said, “I love that kids are getting the team experience of sports, but for education." 📚 Read the full article for a full-circle moment that occurred at this year's City Final. https://lnkd.in/ghEg6fpV P.S. Thanks to The Seattle Public Library Foundation, the Loeb Family Charitable Foundations, the Northwest Literacy Foundation and Pemco Insurance for supporting the Global Reading Challenge!

Ready for a very timely conversation? Shamichael Hallman, author of “Meet Me at the Library,” will speak on Monday, April 14 about why the public library may be our best hope for bridging current societal divides and creating strong, inclusive communities. In his book, Hallman argues that in an age of loneliness and isolation, public libraries are increasingly playing an essential role in building social cohesion, promoting civic renewal, and advancing the ideals of a healthy democracy. Many are reimagining themselves in new and innovative ways, actively reaching out to the communities they serve. Today, libraries are becoming essential institutions for repairing society. Join this essential and timely conversation, presented by Town Hall and The Seattle Public Library, supported by The Seattle Public Library Foundation, The Gary and Connie Kunis Foundation, and The Seattle Times. Community partners are Friends of The Seattle Public Library, the Soapbox Project, and Elliott Bay Book Company. Registration required; sliding scale and livestream options available. https://lnkd.in/gJEP5J23
