ASIMOV'S SPACE-BASED SOLAR POWER IDEA HEADS TO THE MOON Firefly Aerospace's plucky Blue Ghost spaceship is headed for the moon right now - but after the sun sets on the mission, the spacecraft is expected to survive only five hours into the utterly-frigid 14-day lunar night. What's needed to battle this cryogenic crunch, which kills all uncrewed surface missions with annoying regularity, is a way to get mission-saving power beamed to landers, rovers, habs and other surface assets, especially at the south pole, where it's hoped ice (for which read: rocket fuel) will be mined in frozen, permanently shadowed regions. An innovative answer to the problem is being engineered by Volta Space Technologies of Montreal and Colorado: a constellation of laser beaming smallsats (circa 300kg) in low lunar orbit, which will supply power-as-a-service to subscribing lunar surface assets. For the first time in history, a lunar rover has been wirelessly charged via laser. On November 7, 2024, we demonstrated the ability to wirelessly power a lunar rover over a 200m distance, with autonomous tracking and power levels that are sufficient to survive the lunar night and extend operations in permanently shadowed regions. To top it all off, this demonstration was done with a laser that has already undergone environmental testing, including the equivalent of 18 years in lunar radiation! This milestone is another step in our journey toward building a reliable energy grid for all lunar assets, that will make power radically more affordable than today. Today, European Space Resources Innovation Centre (ESRIC) announced the first cohort of the Space Resources Accelerator — six projects set to fast-track technologies shaping the future of #space exploration and in-situ resource utilisation (#ISRU). This innovative programme, part of the ESA BSGN | Business in Space Growth Network Industry Accelerators, empowers ventures to develop solutions for European Space Agency - ESA’s #lunar exploration efforts and the entire space resources value chain. During the programme, participants will refine their projects with in-kind support from ESRIC, aiming to launch co-funded projects by ESA that demonstrate their technologies in lunar conditions. Meet the first cohort and their projects: 🇩🇪 FibreCoat– High-performance materials for lunar infrastructure. 🇱🇺 Maana Electric – Solar resource production on the Moon. 🇵🇱 Orbital Matter – Additive manufacturing for lunar infrastructure. 🇬🇧 Orbit Fab UK – Fuel supply for orbital and lunar surface vehicles. 🇬🇧 Space Power – Power beaming and lunar dust mitigation. 🇨🇦 Volta Space Technologies – Wireless power transmission around the Moon. This milestone underscores ESRIC’s commitment to fostering innovation and scaling solutions from concept to deployment. 🚀 Together, we’re building the future of sustainable space exploration!

#IAC2024 was great. Volta Space Technologies presented the first energy-as-a-service architecture for Moon development, the LightGrid. We are designing new systems, bending light rays, programming circuits and cutting metal with a unique, highly-experienced, world-class team to bring a new capability to reality and put the words "sustained and affordable" before "Lunar presence".
