To enhance the development and conservation of energy and mineral resources in a safe and environmentally sound manner
About us
The Virginia Department of Energy (Virginia Energy) serves a large and varied group of people, organizations and agencies throughout the Commonwealth. Through its programs, the agency deploys renewable energy and promotes renewable energy, energy efficiency, regulates mining and natural gas industries and protects citizens near those areas, protects and improves the environment through enforcement and reclamation and works to improve the economy through development and job growth with a special focus in coal-impacted communities. The agency is resource for localities to know where commodities exist within their geology and, through extensive mapping data, to know where historic and current mining is occurring as well as opportunities to develop land through reclamation.

Virginia Energy is helping shape the future of infrastructure, land use, and energy in the Commonwealth. This week, our experts joined industry leaders to share how we’re streamlining development, advancing data tools, and supporting reliable, affordable, and increasingly clean energy solutions at the Virginia Military Institute Center for Leadership and Ethics’ Environment Virginia Symposium in #Lynchburg. Director Glenn Davis and Deputy Director Julianne Szyper joined Alison Kaufmann and Katharine Bond for an engaging discussion on balancing growth, sustainability, and innovation as we navigate Virginia’s energy future. Director Davis also spoke on the importance of data centers in Virginia and the critical need for reliable baseload power to meet growing demand in a “Perspectives on Data Centers” panel alongside Julie Bolthouse, John Larson, Kate Smiley, and Brian George. State Geologist and Director of Geology and Mineral Resources Matt Heller joined Danielle S. and Stu Blankenship to showcase how Virginia's innovative geospatial tools are improving environmental monitoring, infrastructure planning, and water resource management across the Commonwealth.

A new report out of Stanford Energy confirms what Virginia's energy strategy already recognizes: natural gas is critical to ensuring reliability when demand surges. With Virginia's unprecedented growth in energy demand, this flexibility remains essential to our energy security and economic growth. Six big ideas to help avoid a U.S. electricity crisis A report from Stanford University outlines six key ideas to address America's growing electricity demand, which is expected to increase 15-20% in the next decade and double by 2050. The proposals emerged from a February meeting of over 80 energy experts at Stanford. The six ideas include: 1. Strengthening American energy security, particularly for AI development 2. Implementing a true "all-of-the-above" energy strategy using all available resources 3. Creating a federal-state grid investment fund to improve regional interconnection 4. Streamlining permitting processes for new energy infrastructure 5. Making grid policies more flexible to accelerate project connections 6. And modernizing utility business models to prioritize smart technologies. The report emphasizes that expanding an affordable, reliable grid is a nonpartisan issue requiring collaboration between government, regulators, utilities, financial institutions, and technology companies. With AI processing, domestic manufacturing revival, and transportation electrification driving demand, experts warn that America's economic growth and technological leadership could falter without urgent grid modernization. The Trump administration and 119th Congress now face this challenge, which former FERC Chairman Pat Wood III described as technically feasible but requiring "committed leadership" to implement.
