  • Great news from the VDOT Salem District! The new Appalachian Trail Pedestrian Bridge over Route 311 in Roanoke County is now OPEN. The new pedestrian bridge that carries the Appalachian Trail over Route 311 (Catawba Valley Drive) in Roanoke County opened on March 27, 2025. The bridge is located at the McAfee Knob trailhead of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The bridge will enhance safety for pedestrians who park at the trailhead and cross Route 311 to access the trail away from vehicular traffic. The parking area at the trailhead that was closed during the bridge construction has reopened. The new concrete and steel bridge is 90-feet long, eight feet wide and spans 17.5 feet above the Route 311 roadway. The bridge has clearance similar to an interstate highway so standard commercial vehicles will be able to pass beneath the structure without restriction. The bridge's appearance blends in with the Appalachian Trail’s natural setting with gray architectural treatments to simulate rock. A sidewalk ramp was constructed to allow handicapped access from the parking area onto bridge. VDOT, in partnership with the National Park Service, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club, Roanoke County and the Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission, developed plans for the bridge as a long-term safety improvement. “This bridge resulted from a great partnership between local, state and federal agencies and volunteer groups, and it will provide visitors to this popular location with a safety benefit for generations to come,” said Ken King, district engineer for VDOT’s Salem District. The McAfee Knob Trailhead Shuttle is available to provide transportation to and from the trailhead. • April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. VDOT, Virginia Department Of Motor Vehicles, Virginia State Police, and DRIVE SMART Virginia are urging motorists to keep their heads up and eyes on the road. Distracted driving, such as using a smartphone, eating or drinking, or not focusing on the road, can lead to tragic consequences. “Distracted driving is far too common these days, and it puts drivers and others on Virginia’s roadways at serious risk,” said VDOT Commissioner Stephen Brich. “Taking your eyes off the road to check your email or send a text message — even for a second — creates a dangerous environment. Everyone can do their part by staying focused when behind the wheel.” Read more: https://bit.ly/3G4etbN

  • 💪 Expertise, innovation, and a vision for the future— all in a quick read! The Federal Programs Management Division (FPMD) is shaping how VDOT manages federally funded projects through strategic planning, collaboration, and new technology. Learn how this team’s hard work will streamline processes and create lasting impact for Virginia’s transportation network. 📖 Swipe through to learn more or read the full story below: The Federal Programs Management Division (FPMD) recently held a strategic planning workshop and team retreat. The retreat was facilitated with the assistance of the Performance Transformation Division and Kickstart Specialists. Strategic planning helps provide the direction, development of success metrics and momentum for the team as they develop a new way to conduct business and engage with internal and external customers.    In alignment with the VDOT mission “We Keep Virginia Moving”, FPMD supports transportation initiatives by coordination with districts, divisions, Federal Highway Administration, Federal Transit Authority and other state agencies to develop, manage and implement the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). FPMD obligates more than $1.3B annually in support of federally funded VDOT projects. FPMD is comprised of four sections. The Planning and Reporting Team manages STIP activity and federal reporting. The Federal Team authorizes and obligates projects based on project schedules and federal requirements. The Final Voucher Team ensures projects are properly closed and all eligible federal reimbursement can be received. The Cross-Functional and Strategic Initiatives Team ensures access to data for strategic planning, reporting, analysis, and obligation planning. FPMD launched the new UNITY application to assist districts in the management of project end dates. New development is underway in UNITY to assist districts in managing other scheduled tasks and will reduce time and effort required. In the coming months, FPMD will be heavily engaged in the development of a new system that consolidates and automates many manual processes; a system that will create a central entry point for engagement with the team. FPMD teams will be realigned to better meet the needs of stakeholders and provide transparency in how FPMD works. As the system comes online, all stakeholders will be provided training. FPMD is excited about what is on the horizon.
