Today, we recognize Michelle Welch Brasfield, EdD from our Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Research (CEPR) for her recent peer-reviewed publication "Classroom Calming Corners: Peaceful Spaces for Times of Transition." Counseling Psychology doctoral student Sam Raines assisted in this work. Brasfield and her co-authors explore the implementation of classroom calming corners, or designated areas equipped with soft furnishings and soothing materials, to help students manage emotional dysregulation. Their research in elementary and middle school settings found that these calming corners effectively assisted students in returning to a state of equilibrium, allowing them to remain engaged in the learning environment. Both students and teachers reported high satisfaction with this approach. Counseling Psychology (CPSY) graduate Alexandra Fuss has been featured in the Harvard Gazette for her research on "medical gaslighting." This term describes situations where patients feel their health concerns are dismissed or minimized by healthcare providers. Dr. Fuss emphasizes that while such experiences are real and impactful, they often lack malicious intent and may result from systemic pressures on medical professionals. Our next Why I Teach takes us to Lakeland Elementary where we find Ashley Gordin ('97). 🎥🔦🎬👩🏫 As a young Memphian, Gordin had two aspirations in life: 1.) Go to The University of Memphis and 2.) become a teacher. Fast forward 28 years, and she'll be the first to tell you that she wouldn't change a thing about her time both at the UofM and in the classroom. Celebrating Black Alumni: Dr. Cynthia A. Mitchell is a graduate director and associate professor of educational leadership at Christian Brothers University. She came into this position after a nearly 25-year stint at Memphis-Shelby County Schools, working her way up from teacher to the district's manager of leadership development. Dr. Mitchell received her doctorate from the University of Memphis in 2015, with a leadership specialization in urban education. She had been out of school with a master's for over a decade at that point, but there was something about UofM that she felt was a "beacon of knowledge" that would help her and other future leaders make meaningful change in the world of urban education. “I stand on the shoulders of those who came before me—great individuals who worked tirelessly to progress personally while paving the way for me. Their sacrifices are a challenge I embrace, carrying the torch of responsibility to honor their legacy, pay it forward, and strive to make the future and the world a better place.” We're proud to call Mitchell a #Tiger 🐯 #Education #GTG #GoTigersGo #UrbanEducation

What an honor it was to host Bertha Looney for a Lunch and Learn at the University of Memphis! Looney is the last surviving member of the Memphis State Eight, the first African American students who courageously integrated then-Memphis State University in 1959. Today, she reflected on her experiences as a student, sharing powerful stories of resilience, sacrifice, and the weight of being a catalyst for change in Memphis. Her journey is a testament to strength and perseverance, and we're grateful for her sharing it with us! #GoTigersGo University of Memphis
