“Seven days in the Dominican Republic on this mission trip have left an imprint on my soul that words can hardly capture. Together, we brought four medical clinics to communities in need, providing care, comfort, and compassion. We handed off prescriptions, assembled life-changing wheelchairs and transformed a schoolhouse into a place ready to inspire young minds. Beyond the numbers, it was the people—the like-minded, kind-hearted volunteers who became family, the two roommates who taught me so much, the conversations that sparked deep reflection and the endless smiles that filled each day with warmth. Every moment was a gift. I returned home with a heart full of gratitude, counting my blessings with even more appreciation.” — Cristina Smith, RN, La Grange

UChicago Medicine AdventHealth team members recently joined a mission trip to the Dominican Republic—this week, they’re sharing their experiences. “This mission trip was a reboot and a beautiful reminder of what life is. The individuals I met are a beautiful reminder of true empathy and love. Life is not easy for anyone, but the impact I saw from those receiving our assistance was enough to last a lifetime. From the smiles on the children’s faces, to those receiving wheelchairs, what I received in return was immensely fulfilling. Seeing physicians, therapists, pharmacists and many more come together in such a pronounced unison was breathtaking.” — Claudia Cheboub, RN, Hinsdale

A team of UChicago Medicine AdventHealth team members recently returned from a mission trip to the Dominican Republic, partnering with AdventHealth Global Missions to provide medical care, distribute wheelchairs, and support a school construction project in Santo Domingo. During the trip, the team treated more than 1,500 patients, dispensed nearly 5,000 prescriptions, and participated in the “Chair the Love” event, providing wheelchairs to individuals in need. Volunteers also assisted with painting a newly built school that will soon open to local children. All this week, we will be sharing testimonials from our volunteers about their experiences. Stay tuned for more. #MissionInAction #FeelingWhole
