🔦✨ Shining a Light on Photonics at MAE! ✨🔦 Recently, students in Assistant Professor Lisa Poulikakos’s Introduction to Photonics course had the incredible opportunity to hear from Dr. Tim Day, Senior VP & GM at Leonardo DRS Daylight Solutions! Dr. Day’s guest talk, "Frequency Stabilized Lasers: A 35-Year Passion for Precision," offered students a firsthand look at cutting-edge photonics research and career opportunities in the industry. This #10 ranking is up from #11 last year. Among public engineering schools, the Jacobs School of Engineering ranks #6 best engineering school in the nation, up from #7 last year. ✨ MAE 60th Anniversary Spotlight: Tammy Ma ✨ From UC San Diego to leading the charge in energy research, Tammy Ma is a true Trailblazing Triton! 🚀 As an MAE alumna, Ma’s journey has taken her from classrooms and labs at UC San Diego to groundbreaking research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory—where she plays a pivotal role in advancing clean energy solutions. Now, she’s returning to MAE’s 60th Anniversary Celebration as a keynote speaker, sharing insights on her career, the future of energy, and the impact of her time at UC San Diego. 🔬💡 Reflecting on her time at UC San Diego, Ma credits the university’s rigorous training, collaborative research environment, and strong mentorship for shaping her path. ✨MAE 60th Anniversary Spotlight Series: Greg Warner’s Path to Success✨ MAE alumnus Gregory Warner (B.S. ‘87) leveraged his engineering background to build a successful career in finance, demonstrating how analytical thinking and problem-solving skills translate across industries. 📈 ⭐Warner’s hands-on experience in machine coding and robotics at UC San Diego laid the groundwork for his career. A pivotal IBM internship sparked his interest in business, leading him to Wall Street after earning his MBA at The Wharton School. ⭐A defining influence in Warner’s journey was Professor Alan Schneider, who instilled in him the fundamentals of solving complex problems—skills Warner still applies today as the President of Ingleside Investors. ⭐Inspired by his own experience, Warner has established scholarships and fellowships to support the next generation of engineers at the Jacobs School of Engineering. 💡His Advice? “UC San Diego is constantly evolving and offers a world-class education. UC San Diego alumna and newly minted NASA astronaut, Deniz Burnham, will be a keynote speaker at the Department of MAE's 60th Anniversary Celebration!🚀 ⭐ After completing two years of rigorous astronaut training, Deniz joins an elite group of UC San Diego graduates, all women, in NASA's astronaut corps. ⭐ Deniz’s journey to NASA was shaped by her education in critical thinking and problem-solving. Her engineering background, combined with leadership experience in the energy industry and the Navy Reserves, helped prepare her for the intense astronaut training that earned her wings. ⭐ Now part of NASA’s Artemis generation, she’s ready for missions to the Moon, ISS, and Mars!
