  • As we look ahead to 2025, we explore what experts predict for this year’s Atlantic hurricane season. Colorado State University (CSU) and The Climate Adaptation Center Inc. (CAC) both project an active hurricane season for 2025. Here's a quick comparison of their predictions, along with last year’s numbers: Named Storms 🔷 CSU: 17 🔷 CAC: 17 🔷 2024’s activity: 18 Hurricanes 🔷 CSU: 9 🔷 CAC: 10 🔷 2024’s activity: 11 Major Hurricanes 🔷 CSU: 4 🔷 CAC: 5 🔷 2024’s activity: 5 Both forecasts agree on higher-than-average activity, driven by warmer sea surface temperatures and likely neutral El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions. The Gulf Coast, Caribbean, and Florida are all at high risk. These coastal areas should also anticipate the threat of rapid intensification of storms. Being prepared is crucial, as both organizations emphasize the growing risk of severe and impactful storms. • The 2024 tornado season was one for the record books, with significant events and valuable lessons for communities and emergency planners alike. Here are some key takeaways to understand its impact and prepare for the future: 🔶 Record Activity: With 1,473 confirmed tornadoes, 2024 is the second most active tornado season in U.S. history. 🔶 Economic Impact: Damages exceeded $38.8 billion when accounting for severe storms that spawned tornadoes, according to the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). 🔶 Geographical Shifts: Tornadoes increasingly occurred outside traditional Tornado Alley, hitting regions like the Midwest and Southeast harder. 🔶 Late-Season Tornadoes: An October 2024 tornado surge highlighted shifting weather patterns, raising concerns about longer, unpredictable seasons. 🔶 Preparedness Lessons: Advances in forecasting and planning saved lives, but rising storm frequency reinforces the need for increased community readiness. • As Women's History Month concludes, Tidal Basin’s President of Federal Services, Catherine Clinch, shares the defining moments, mentors, and lessons that shaped her perspectives as a woman in leadership. Catherine said, “I started off my career in the hazardous waste and architecture/engineering consulting profession, an intense and demanding field. Early on, my manager demonstrated the importance of empathetic leadership, which profoundly impacted my growth. Now, as a leader, I strive to emulate that approach, prioritizing empathy in how I guide and support my team. Lacy Suiter, the former Tennessee Emergency Management director, FEMA director/executive, and founding member of EMAC and NEMA, also greatly influenced my career. I considered him a strong mentor. He helped me navigate my first big, multi-agency biohazard disaster. Lacy was always there to provide guidance while enabling me to manage the bio-hazard program. In the Architectural & Engineering/Emergency Management community, women have become prominent leaders, a shift that took decades to unfold. It wasn’t always this way. Over the past 30 years, our workforce has evolved as more women entered the field, supported one another, and contributed their diverse skills. Two key factors drove this cultural shift: 1) strong leaders who valued talent and teamwork, and 2) an increasing number of women actively pursuing careers in the industry. These factors have strengthened our teams by bringing together a broad range of skills and experiences. I am especially grateful for the incredible female peers who have supported me throughout my career and continue to do so. Their insights and collaboration have been invaluable in preparing for critical projects, delivering impactful programs, and addressing complex challenges. I firmly believe that a solid network is vital to professional growth and development. Together, we achieve more, and I am deeply honored to celebrate the strength and impact of my prior mentors and peers in the workplace.” #WomensHistoryMonth #EmergencyManagement #DisasterResponse
