Kindness is contagious! DRCA organized a raffle at our annual membership meeting to raise $5,000 victims of natural disasters. But DRCA members went above and beyond - matching each other's donations and raising a total of $30,000 in just one day! Thank you to Bright Harbor, Indelible, DebrisTech, EM1 and Garner Environmental Services for your generosity.

What a weekend at the National Emergency Management Association Mid-Year Forum in Washington, DC! It was packed with action, fantastic presentations, and countless networking opportunities, not to mention some wonderful surprises. As Chair of the Disaster Recovery Coalition of America, we were thrilled to host our membership meeting and inaugural social event alongside the Forum. During our Friday night social, we aimed to raffle off a $5000 donation to a disaster charity chosen by the winner. But before we could announce the winner, five other companies generously matched our donation, resulting in a total of $30,000 raised! Huge thanks to Bright Harbor, Indelible, DebrisTech, EM1, and Garner Environmental Services for their incredible support. If you were there, you know it was a truly unforgettable moment. Get ready for next year, we are going to raise $250k for a well-deserving charity. Bring your checkbook! When the California wildfires broke out, United Rentals was operating seven days a week, around the clock. From an original seven-piece order for equipment from FEMA and the EPA, within ten days every United Rentals business unit was in Los Angeles. General Rentals, temporary power solutions, lighting, mobile storage containers, portable restrooms, and other essential equipment needed for emergency response and recovery efforts were onsite with over 3,000 pieces of equipment deployed for environmental clean-up efforts. United Rentals’ role as a community partner extends beyond just supplying equipment. LA District Sales Manager Paul Kotchasak and his team remain involved in logistical support, ensuring that the necessary resources are quickly mobilized to areas that need them most. DRCA is proud to support our members, like United Rentals, who provide critical resources for communities during their most difficult times, and do not stop until the job is done.

An Open Letter to Emergency Managers To my fellow emergency management professionals, friends, and colleagues, I want to acknowledge the concerns many of you are feeling in light of the President’s announcement and the establishment of the Federal Emergency Management Agency Review Council to reevaluate FEMA’s future. This news may bring uncertainty, but it also offers an opportunity to shape the future of disaster management in our country. Your work your expertise, your dedication, and your unwavering commitment to protecting lives and strengthening communities remains critical. The challenges we face as a nation, from hurricanes to wildfires to public health emergencies, require the very skills you bring to the table. As this council begins its work, I encourage you to remain focused on your mission and take an active role in the conversation. Here are a few ways you can contribute and stay engaged: 1. Stay Informed: Follow updates about the council’s work and decisions. Organizations like the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM), the National Emergency Management Association (NEMA), the Disaster Recovery Coalition of America (DRCA) and other interested parties will likely share insights and resources. 2. Engage with Professional Networks: Join discussions within your local, state, and national emergency management networks. Your experiences in the field provide valuable insights that should inform any future changes. 3. Advocate for Your Profession: Share stories of your impact with policymakers, community leaders, and the public. Highlight the successes and lessons learned that demonstrate the importance of a strong and unified emergency management system. Call your federal representatives to voice your concerns! 4. Prepare for Transition: Use this time to document your programs, partnerships, and processes. This will ensure continuity of services and provide a foundation for any structural changes that may come. 5. Strengthen Community Resilience: Remember that emergency management is about building local capacity and resilience. Collaborate with your communities to reinforce their preparedness, regardless of changes at the federal level. Finally, remember this: regardless of agency names, structures, or leadership changes, the heart of emergency management is you. Your dedication to saving lives, reducing suffering, and helping communities recover is what matters most. Stay strong, stay connected, and stay hopeful. For my awesome FEMA friends and teammates, I have your back. Helping people before, during, and after disasters is our singular mission. Thank you for everything you do to make this country safer, stronger, and more prepared for whatever lies ahead. FEMA & DRCA Work Together to Provide Guidance for Hurricane Helene & Milton Response: In support of FEMA’s national response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton, the Disaster Recovery Coalition of America (DRCA), in close collaboration with FEMA’s Office of Recovery and the Director of Public Assistance, Robert Pesapane, convened on October 8 and October 18, 2024, to address critical Debris Operations related to both disasters. During these meetings, DRCA and its members provided timely feedback and raised key concerns to FEMA leadership, focusing on safeguarding the eligibility of debris costs, including contract price amendments. Drawing on both historical and current best practices, DRCA offered actionable recommendations to enhance the disaster response effort. On November 20, FEMA published the attached Fact Sheet, incorporating many of DRCA’s suggestions. The Fact Sheet, applicable to all disasters, delivers essential guidance to applicants on maintaining cost eligibility when price amendments are required. DRCA is proud of the meaningful contributions of its members and the strong collaboration with FEMA. This partnership establishes a solid foundation for our forthcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with FEMA, which will further strengthen our shared commitment to effective disaster recovery. https://lnkd.in/efVhF4Uh

Big turnout at the 2024 National Urban Search and Rescue Conference in the City of Orlando today! Honored to be asked to deliver the keynote speech on Leading During Crisis (and more) to many of the nation’s US&R heroes! Good to see many friends and colleagues like Chief Fred Endrikat, Todd Livingston and my former FEMA Advisor, Levi Gibson! Shared some insights when faced while leading during crisis (like Go Big!), personal and team resilience, leveraging emergency managers during US&R operations and how to increase your value to your community. Many thanks to State Urban Search and Rescue Alliance President Jamey Brads and Walter Lewis for all the help. Hill International, Inc. Global Infrastructure Solutions Inc.
