About us

VIGILANT is an interdisciplinary effort by leading European researchers partnered with four European police authorities from Spain, Greece, Estonia and Moldova to develop an integrated platform of disinformation detection and analysis tools from FP7 and H2020 projects. It focuses on providing police authorities with technical capabilities and institutional knowledge necessary to combat disinformation linked to criminal activities while, at the same time, equip them with an understanding of the social drivers and behavioural dynamics behind the phenomena. The project also includes first-of-its-kind disinformation response and investigation training for police officers and aims to set up a specialist European network for police officers to share their experiences and knowledge promoting a unified European approach to a problem that ignores borders. This multi-dimensional approach will increase citizen trust in digital information and infrastructure. Get in touch via info@vigilantproject.eu

  • 🤖 ⬛ A reminder from Kempelen Institute of Intelligent Technologies: Don't fall for the "Black Box" excuse!  #AI shouldn’t be a mystery. Some companies claim their AI is too complex to explain—but that’s often just an excuse. Explainable AI (#XAI) makes decisions transparent, fair, and accountable. When AI affects your life, you deserve to know why. Let’s push for #transparency in tech! 🔍 #BeAIware #ExplainableAI #AITransparency

Be A(I)ware of the “Black Box” Excuse! ⬛ A message from Kempelen Institute of Intelligent Technologies for the Be A(I)ware campaign. What is the black box excuse? Some companies say their AI is too complicated to explain. That’s called the black box excuse. A black box is something you can’t see inside—you give it input, it gives you output, but you have no idea how it made that decision. Companies use this excuse to avoid explaining their AI’s actions. Sometimes AI is truly complex—but often, it can be explained. They just choose not to, especially when it’s inconvenient or uncomfortable. But there’s a better way: Explainable AI (#XAI). So, what is XAI? 📙 Explainable AI is AI that clearly shows how it made a decision—in a way that people can understand. It removes the mystery and gives you real answers. Researchers and developers are creating tools to make AI transparent, fair, and accountable—so people aren’t left guessing. Real-life example 🔍: You apply for a job, and AI rejects your application. - With black box AI: No explanation. Just rejected. - With Explainable AI: “You were not selected because your application lacks experience with project management tools.” When AI affects your life—your job, your loan, your healthcare—you deserve to know why. Let’s speak up for honest, fair, and transparent technology. #BeAIware #ExplainableAI #AITransparency #FairTech #PeopleFirstAI #ResponsibleAI

“Be A(I)ware of the ‘black box’ excuse. AI decisions shouldn’t be a mystery. Some companies claim AI is too complex to explain, avoiding accountability. But Explainable AI (XAI) proves transparency is possible, ensuring decisions are understandable. Demand and ensure fairness! (KInIT)”

  • How can #AI help counter terrorism online? 🚨 🔎 A new report by UNICRI - United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute and UNCCT (UN Office of Counter-Terrorism) looks at how law enforcement and counter-terrorism agencies in South Asia and South-East Asia can use AI to tackle online extremist threats. As digital technologies and social media grow across the region, so does the risk of vulnerable users being exposed to terrorist content. 💡 This report breaks down how AI can help, the challenges involved, and what’s needed to ensure its use is both effective and ethical. 📑 Read the whole report: https://bit.ly/3DRbDGn #CounterTerrorism #Security
