Veterans in the U.S. face numerous healthcare challenges, including limited access to early-phase cancer clinical trials, a critical component of advancing cancer treatment. In response to this need, The University of Kansas Cancer Center and the Kansas City Veteran Medical Center (KCVA) have established a groundbreaking agreement designed to address this gap and expand access to clinical trials for veterans. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in improving care for a population that has historically been underserved for cancer research and treatment. Learn more ➜ https://bit.ly/4lfKptY.

A key to accelerating cancer control and research lies in fostering strong community partnerships. The University of Kansas Cancer Center / Masonic Cancer Alliance Community Advisory Board (CAB) stands at the heart of this mission, ensuring that the voices of Kansas and western Missouri are heard. By bringing together community leaders, the CAB helps shape cancer research, outreach and education, making sure the cancer center’s efforts align with the unique needs and challenges of those it serves. Through this collaboration, the CAB is not just a sounding board, but a driver behind meaningful efforts at the cancer center. Learn more ➜ https://bit.ly/3Y2Qm3J.

With a $5 million gift, Tom and Teresa Walsh have set in motion a profound shift in how cancer survivorship is understood and supported at The University of Kansas Cancer Center. For Teresa, a cancer survivor herself, the decision to contribute was personal, rooted in her own experience of navigating life after treatment. Her journey exposed critical gaps in posttreatment care – a realization that became the inspiration for the new Teresa and Tom Walsh Survivorship Program that will house the Center for Survivorship and Patient-Oriented Research, led by Dr. Anthony Sung. While progesterone has long been recognized for its role in reproductive health, its impact on cancer progression remains largely uncharted territory. Most breast cancer therapies target estrogen, either by blocking its production or preventing it from activating its receptor. Dr. Christy Hagan's research is shifting the focus to progesterone, specifically how it helps cancer cells evade the immune system.
