WARNING: Democracy is at risk. Join the fight to hold Facebook to account.

About us

In November 2018, Mark Zuckerberg announced a new ‘independent’ body to provide outside oversight and in May this year the first 20 members of its new Oversight Board were announced. But it’s still not operational and even if it was, it only has limited powers to rule on whether content that was taken down should go back up. And once a case has been referred to it, this self-styled ‘Supreme Court’ can take up to 90 days to reach a verdict. This doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the many urgent risks the platform poses to the upcoming election. So, instead, we’re launching our own Oversight Board. The Real Facebook Oversight Board. We’re not waiting for another election to go wrong. We believe accountability in real-time is vital.

  • 🚨 We joined more than 200 civil-society organizations, researchers & journalists have sent a letter to the top executives of leading social-media platforms calling on them to protect democratic elections worldwide in 2024. Our demands are simple ⬇️ 1️⃣Invest in greater platform integrity, by reinstating election-integrity policies and staffing up critical platform integrity teams. 2️⃣ To the extent that platforms permit political advertising, swiftly enforce rules against election lies and hate in political advertising. 3️⃣Require disclosure of AI-generated political content, including ads, prohibiting the use of deepfakes in political ads, algorithmically promoting factual elections content. 4️⃣Place greater friction to reduce the visibility and easy distribution of election-related content that has been flagged and is awaiting review. 5️⃣Hold influencer, public figure, and political candidate accounts to the same moderation and enforcement standards as everyone else. 6️⃣Improve transparency and enable civil society oversight of enforcement practices by regularly sharing virality and enforcement reports. ❗Learn more about why we’re making these demands at https://lnkd.in/egT2_jRK
