About us
Conceived over 60 years ago as one of the nation’s first nonprofit theaters, The Public has long operated on the principles that theater is an essential cultural force and that art and culture belong to everyone. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Patrick Willingham, The Public’s wide breadth of programming includes an annual season of new work at its landmark home at Astor Place, Free Shakespeare in the Park at The Delacorte Theater in Central Park, the Mobile Unit touring throughout New York City’s five boroughs, Public Works, Public Shakespeare Initiative, and Joe’s Pub. Since premiering HAIR in 1967, The Public continues to create the canon of American Theater and is currently represented on Broadway by the Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Their programs and productions can also be seen regionally across the country and around the world. The Public has received 60 Tony Awards, 190 Obie Awards, 57 Drama Desk Awards, 61 Lortel Awards, 36 Outer Critics Circle Awards, 13 New York Drama Critics’ Circle Awards, 62 AUDELCO Awards, 6 Antonyo Awards, and 6 Pulitzer Prizes. Join us on Sunday, May 4 at 7:30pm for a conversation with iconic Broadway producer of HAMILTON and RENT, Jeffrey Seller, about his new memoir Theater Kid. Led by artistic collaborators Lin-Manuel Miranda and Thomas Kail, don't miss this one-night-only event in the room with some of Broadway's best! Get your tickets: https://lnkd.in/eXWEN789 Theater Kid will officially be released on May 6, but an early signed copy of the book is included in the cost of your ticket for this event and will be distributed that evening. Jeffrey Seller is one of the most successful Broadway producers of our time, and the only one to have mounted two Pulitzer Prize-winning musicals: HAMILTON and RENT. From his early days as an office assistant, to meeting Jonathan Larson and experiencing the triumph and tragedy of RENT, to working with Lin-Manuel Miranda on IN THE HEIGHTS and HAMILTON, Seller pulls back the curtain on the joyous and gut-wrenching process of making new musicals, finding new audiences, and winning a Tony Award—all while finding himself.

It’s one singular sensation! ✨ A CHORUS LINE had its world premiere at The Public Theater 50 years ago TODAY, on April 15, 1975!!! 🎉 The production was conceived and directed by Michael Bennett and featured a book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban, and choreography by Bob Avian and Michael Bennett. The original production featured Kelly Bishop (billed as Carole Bishop), Wayne Cilento, Baayork Lee, Priscilla Lopez, Robert LuPone, Donna McKechnie, Sammy Williams, and more. It soon transferred to Broadway from The Public Theater, opening at the Shubert Theatre on July 25, 1975. The show went on to win the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Musical. The original production ran for 6,137 performances, becoming the longest-running show in Broadway history on September 29, 1983, a record it held for nearly 14 years! 🌟 The groundbreaking, beloved musical set a new standard for Broadway and remains relevant, poignant, provocative, and explosively entertaining. A CHORUS LINE is a timeless show for anyone who has ever dared to dream, and we are so honored to be a part of its incredible history and legacy! 💛 In celebration of this exciting anniversary, come visit the A CHORUS LINE exhibit in our lobby. The display features six costumes from the original production as well as some exciting memorabilia outside the Newman Theater, where the show began.
