Before starting Nomain, I thought mainframe technology was mostly about closed systems and big enterprise companies. But I soon realized there's actually a lot of great open-source tools and active communities out there. Internships are still pointless. Finding no internship this summer is better than finding one just for exposure. Especially in a year like this marked as "The Revenge of the Junior Developer!" Never had an internship in college. Instead, spent my time contributing to open-source projects with ALiAS, Google Summer of Code, HackMIT which gave me a real-world experience of working alongside professionals and field experts all while being remote. Each open-source program, mentorship, community gets you one step closer towards your dream opportunity.
