Sometimes you got to take a step back and really let something sink in. I know, I’m late but I always try to be thoughtful :-) For me, this happened over the last couple of days after TNF Africa in London and my conclusion is: - Institutional adoption of digital assets is (still) well under way. - Adoption happens in Africa and everywhere around the globe. - Wallets respectively digital asset custody systems are being put in place to engage with this dynamic and probably ever changing world. - Banks will play the role of “adults in the room” especially following Bybit: This is a very important role to play! - Adoption will look the same for everyone over time on the base level “custody” (self-custody). For a bank to survive and have a viable business case there almost isn’t the option to not self-custody the keys. Team TNF at the close of a wonderful few days spent with wonderful people at TNF Africa 2025 here in London. This community holds a special place in our hearts as we have grown together through the years in Cape Town, Jo’burg and now London. The plenary discussions consisted of a blend of macro issues affecting everyone in the post trade and custody world, combined with a truly unique set of issues pertaining to Africa. Despite the crazy volatility in the markets this week, there was a warmth of camaraderie in the room which gave the feeling that we will all weather this storm whilst sticking together. It’s clear that Africa’s journey in this space is largely retail-focused for now, but to transition into a more institutionalized ecosystem, we need to see greater regulation harmonization, standardization, and a deeper focus on education for market players across the continent. Very timely given the discussions at The Network Forum TNF Africa these last two days. Cross-listings and inter-CSD links - between countries on the continent or with ICSDs - are indeed two paths to increasing market depth, which require less politics than outright, and moderately realistic in the short term, African market infrastructure mergers. All underpinned by international standards and consistent market practices, from settlement cycles to account structure. More to come from our time here with Miguel Espinoza and Daniel Cotti.
