Grünenthal pushed its latest opioid as a safer option. People around the world got hooked. Prescriptions of tapentadol, a lesser-known opioid, have surged in recent years, fueled by the same types of misleading and discredited assertions about its addictive properties that ignited an opioid crisis that claims more than 100,000 lives worldwide each year. The Trump administration’s chaotic slashing of more than 100,000 federal workers threatens an already-strained food safety system. Experts say the FDA’s watchdog for America’s food supply is uniquely vulnerable to ongoing federal cutbacks – which could make the system even more reliant on companies policing themselves. “We’re not at Defcon 5 yet but we’re getting there,” one official told The Examination.
