In the 1970s, the Dana Foundation continues to focus its support on higher education and cancer care. As part of the former, it launches a new initiative, the Alumni Annual Giving Challenge grants, to strengthen the financial position of colleges and universities by encouraging alumni donations and participation. These grants aligned with Charles Dana’s philanthropic philosophy of helping grantees to help themselves. Drew University of Medicine and Science Dana Center for Neuroscience and Society has been paving the way for a new kind of scientific partnership, one where new visions for relevant neuroscience research could be led by the public. It has been an incredible year for the iBCI-CC (implantable Brain Computer Interface Collaborative Community). Briefly, the field of implantable brain-computer interfaces needed a dedicated collaborative community to unleash the potential for collective progress, knowledge sharing, and interdisciplinary collaboration to address challenges, drive innovation, and improve outcomes for individuals with neurological conditions. As articulated in our 2025 Annual Report, since just March of last year, we have obtained FDA recognition, already gained over 380 members, and launched 40 critical projects, organized 1 annual meeting, and maintain 7 active workgroups. Last week, the University of Michigan Science, Technology, & Public Policy Program (STPP) published a new report, “Broadening Horizons: How STEM-in-Society Programs Train Socially Responsible Scientists, Engineers, and Policy Leaders”, that assesses the US landscape of what they call STEM-in-Society educational programs—systematic, multidisciplinary training that prepares professionals to understand how science, technology, engineering, or medicine intersect with ethics, policy, and society. The report, funded by The Kavli Foundation, identifies the opportunities and challenges these programs face and makes recommendations for how they can grow. It is based on a nationwide survey of these programs as well as in-depth case studies.
