When a trauma patient was brought in under police custody for allegedly breaking into a house, she refused to give her name or speak to anyone. But something didn’t sit right with Jennifer, the nurse on duty. The girl’s injuries didn’t match the story—and Jennifer knew it. Instead of brushing it off, Jennifer leaned in with compassion and curiosity. She spent her shift gently building trust, listening without pressure, and letting the patient know she was safe. Eventually, the girl opened up. She gave her real name—and a heartbreaking truth. She had been trafficked. Brought to Phoenix from another state just two weeks earlier. Held by people she barely knew. Thanks to Jennifer’s keen assessment skills, deep empathy, and unwavering advocacy, this young woman was finally seen, heard, and helped. Congratulations, Jennifer!
