It's time for the March Lege Lowdown! 🤠 Each month, we're bringin' you a pretty little tied-up overview of key bills we’re focusing on related to our issue areas: public education, religious freedom, LGBTQIA+ equality, reproductive rights, and any big happenings in immigration and voting rights. https://lnkd.in/gujKuR-y

The 89th Texas Legislative session began on January 14, and whoooo-wheeee have we already seen some Texas-sized shenanigans and downright foolishness from the rodeo clowns who think they run Texas. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, but don’t get bucked off the horse yet! We’re here to lasso it all together. Check out our first installment of The Lege Lowdown, a monthly newsletter from Texas Freedom Network!

Meet our new Executive Director and President Felicia Martin! Felicia became president in January 2025 and joins TFN from The Jed Foundation (JED), where she served as Regional Director of Academic Programs for Texas. We are so excited to have her join us as we celebrate 30 years of protecting progressive values and civil liberties at the Capitol and in local communities — and we're ready for her to lead TFN into its boldest chapter yet.

“Christ’s whole message was about love and mercy and trust and dignity, not control and condemnation and hate and legal power. The Bible is a profoundly liberating story.” - The Rev. Hannah Atkins Romero of Trinity Episcopal Church in Houston, a Just Texas Reproductive Freedom Congregation (RFC) As the aggressive, Trump-fueled Christian right threatens the line between church and state around the country, a growing community of Christians are standing up and speaking out against it in Texas.

On Tuesday, Sept. 10, the State Board of Education (SBOE) heard public testimony on the state’s new, Bible-infused elementary school reading curriculum. An overwhelming majority of the 100+ parents, grandparents, educators, and advocates who testified showed strong opposition, urging the board to reject the materials. It was a powerful showing for the religious freedom of Texas students! ✊ Now, will the conservative-dominated SBOE do their duty as elected officials and actually listen to the will of their constituents? We’ll have to see. TFN is here to bring you the highlights (and lowlights) with your SBOE Rundown.
