Did you know smoking is a significant contributor to dry eye disease? This month, we're highlighting how smoking can lead to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and evaporative dry eye. Smoking is believed to cause "meibomian gland drop out," a condition where the crucial meibomian glands disappear, impacting the production of meibum - the essential oily substance that coats the surface of the eye and helps keep tears from drying out. This can lead to significant dry eye symptoms. While stopping smoking can't reverse existing damage, it may halt further gland loss. Check back each month for more insights into factors that lead to dry eyes. #DryEye #DryEyeDisease #MeibomianGlandDropOut #ophthalmology #EyeHealth

How should I safely use and store my artificial tears? When it comes to safety, the first rule is to check the expiration date. Discard eye drops (and all medications) when they expire. After this date, medications may have decreased effectiveness, increased risk of contamination, and could even potentially undergo chemical changes that make them harmful. Always store artificial tears in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not refrigerate or freeze them. Additionally, most experts agree that artificial tears should be discarded 30 days after the bottle is opened. This is because exposure to air could contaminate the solution. As with all medications, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. #EyeHealth #EyeCare #EyeDropSafety #DryEyeDisease #MedicationStorage
