UC Davis MSBA and MBA students teamed up for Aggie Hacks, building AI-powered crisis systems for smart cities under pressure. In a 48-hour sprint, the students tackled a huge dataset from peer organizers, quickly developing solutions to the frightening simulated emergency. The initial round of judges included Amrutha Gujjar, CEO and founder of sponsor Structured Labs, MSBA Academic Director Carrie Beam, Ph.D. and Lecturer Mehul Rangwala. For one solution, Full-Time MBA Adeyemi Olalemi partnered with MSBAs to turn 50,000+ rows of data into a full-stack prototype combining AI-driven chat, real-time dashboards, blockchain-verified information and misinformation filtering. 🚀 Over the past week, I had the opportunity to work on a unique interview assignment with Structured Labs, a Y Combinator-backed startup that’s redefining how fast, expressive data applications can be built, entirely in Python, through their open-source framework, Preswald. It turned out to be one of the most enjoyable 30-minute builds I’ve ever done. For the challenge, I worked with a real-world meteorite landings dataset (~50,000 rows) and built an interactive geospatial dashboard featuring: • 🧭 Mapbox visualizations with meteorites colored and sized by custom mass-range buckets • 🎛️ Combined filters using `slider` and `text_input` tied to SQL + Pandas querying • 📊 Interactive tables, KPI blocks, and mass-distribution histograms • 🎨 Custom UI branding via `preswald.toml` (favicon, logo, and color scheme) • ⚙️ CLI-based deployment after resolving platform-specific issues What stood out was how naturally expressive the workflow felt. I was able to build full-stack applications with no boilerplate and no frontend dependencies, just clean Python logic and modular UI components. This was more than a coding task, it was a fast and thoughtful deep dive into early-stage product development. I am genuinely excited about what Preswald is building, especially for teams that need intuitive and powerful data tooling without compromising flexibility.
