This was the ultimate startup story.
Juan Lucas Barbier flew into Miami from Medellin, Colombia on the morning redeye. Startup budget.
He had applied for Startup Mania on behalf of his company COBOLpro Corp. (formerly COBOLagency) and got in.
He landed at 4am. He slept on the airport floor.
When I arrived at Mana Tech at 745 am to begin setup, someone was sleeping on the couch. I was confused. I thought maybe it's a Mana employee catching some Z's before starting the day.
A few minutes later, the sleeping couch figure starts to wake up. He rubs his eyes and stretches his arms up in a yawn. He gets up, walks over to me and says, "I'm Juan Lucas with COBOLpro and I'm pitching today."
Then he starts helping me set up the venue, moving around furniture.
The tournament begins and he wins his Round 1 pitch.
Then his Round 2 pitch.
Then his Super 16 pitch.
The sun sets and we begin the finals on our mainstage with a boxing ring set up. Here, the last 8 surviving startups pitch and the goal is to make it to the Final 4.
Juan Lucas walks out to his entrance music of choice, "Still The One" by Orleans.
He's PUMPED. He riles up the crowd during his walkout.
He steps into the ring and motions for more energy.
He gets the crowd into a full call-and-response with, "When I say COBOL you say PRO!"
He pitches with the energy of someone who got a full night's sleep and a complete workout session, not someone running on fumes.
Decision time.
I get the judges' votes. As the MC, I announce COBOLpro advances to the Final 4.
Then in the Final 4, he has one last minute to give a 'plea' -- what else should everyone know?
His passion comes through. His purpose is clear. His potential is obvious.
The judges discuss then hand me their final choice.
Juan Lucas' head is down, fingers crossed, mouthing to himself some kind of pick-me-up speech.
The audience provides a drumroll.
I hold up the mic.
"The winner, and your first ever Startup Mania Champion....
...COBOLPROOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
Juan Lucas throws his hands over his face, fighting back tears, with the biggest smile.
We throw the title belt over his shoulder and hand him the big check.
He wins $5k cash. $2.5k in Delta Air Lines flight vouchers. An exhibitor spot at Startup Grind Conference ($5k value). A contract review from Sisu Powerhouse ($6k value). Up to $350k in Google Cloud credits. Bragging rights and the title belt, which he takes around with him to eMerge Americas the next 2 days.
From sleeping on the floor of the airport earlier that morning as nothing more than anonymous founder, to volunteering to move furniture, to having the respect, adulation, and prizes of being named champion.
He boarded that flight from Medellin with nothing promised in this tournament other than "you will get 60 seconds to pitch in round 1 and you have to win your matchup to advance".
That's believing in yourself.
And that's the magic of Startup Mania.
Congrats Juan Lucas and COBOLpro.
