🚨 NEWS! NEWS! NEWS! 🚨 We recently pulled back some of SFGATE's coverage of SF's narrow, dysfunctional city politics to instead hire a senior California politics reporter to cover the state’s complex legislative landscape — both in major cities and rural towns. That hire started this week. 🧵👇 Welcome to the team, Anabel Sosa! She joins us from the Los Angeles Times, where she was a politics reporter for LAT's Sacramento bureau and covered the state Capitol and local elections. She lives in SF, and got her master's in journalism at UC Berkeley. Also also: We hired a new editor for our copy desk, Antonio Bayucan! He joins us from the SF Chronicle, and is also a Daily Bruin vet. Our staff now has FOUR people on our copy desk, woot woot! A growing copy desk is a good thing! Also also ALSO: We hired another home page editor! Jeff Carillo! He spent over a decade leading desktop, app coverage at Bleacher Report, The Athletic, NewsBreak and Action Network. He was born and raised in the Bay Area, and is a Cal grad. Go Bears! These hires were part of a sizable expansion for SFGATE — we now have 60 journalists (triple what we had in 2019) helping us cover CA top to bottom, coast to Sierra. Also: we passed the LAT in July last year to become the most read media site based on the West Coast! More on the vision here: https://lnkd.in/gskwtFcF

Principal, Director of Mixed Use Development at ELS Architecture and Urban Design; Downtown Berkeley Association Board Member

A great story by Susana Guerrero on SFGATE about the transformation of the Hillsdale Shopping Center's dining terrace by the Bohannon Companies. The ELS and Stantec -designed food hall exemplifies a growing trend in retail development where curated food and beverage offerings are taking center stage as key destination drivers, not complimentary uses. Like the transformation seen at Stonestown Galleria and the long-term tenanting at the Marin Country Mart in Larkspur, the dining terrace embraces a food hall model that blends hospitality-level design with a curated mix of local and regional food and beverage tenants. This approach moves beyond traditional mall food courts, creating a vibrant, experiential environment that attracts both casual diners and food enthusiasts with open seating areas, natural light and an emphasis on place-based design, making it not just a convenience but a draw in itself, anchoring the retail experience and encouraging longer visits, increased foot traffic, and greater community engagement.

🚨 I HAVE NEWS 🚨 In January I told you SFGATE was doing a major national parks coverage expansion, hiring journalists to cover the American West's most loved outdoors spaces. (More on that here: https://lnkd.in/gUbh7-fg) Well, we did it, and we hired a DREAM TEAM 👇 First, meet our national parks contributing editor covering Big Sky Country (Glacier National Park, Grand Teton, Yellowstone, etc.): Kylie Mohr. Kylie is based in Missoula and has written for Everyone (NPR, Politico, High Country News, Jackson Hole News & Guide). She joins us with all kinds of journalism awards, plus a drive for really impactful journalism. Her first story for us was incredible: https://lnkd.in/gnc-UenF Second, allow me to introduce you to our national parks contributing editor covering the Pacific Northwest (Mount Rainier, North Cascades, Olympic, Crater Lake, etc.): Sam Hill. Sam is based in Portland and has contributed to Outside, WIRED, Vice & beyond, and I challenge you to find a photo on any of his social media profiles that isn't one of him at a national park (you can't!). His first SFGATE story on the uncertainty facing Olympic National Park's Hoh Rain Forest is a must read: https://lnkd.in/gbKVAFu2 Third, our national parks contributing editor covering the Southwest Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands) hasn't even started yet! Adrianna Nine is a science journalist based in Phoenix who's written for all the local Phoenix pubs, plus lots of national ones (Business Insider!) and aced our writing test like few people ever have. She joins the team Monday. She's going to be so, so good at this job. This incredible parks team will be managed by award-winning national parks bureau chief Ashley Harrell. In addition to following their work at SFGATE.com, you can also do it via our brand new parks newsletter here: https://lnkd.in/gArXA2ni And if you ever have tips about anything going on in the parks — anonymous or otherwise — you can reach them at: - ashley.harrell@sfgate.com - kylie.mohr@sfgate.com - sam.hill@sfgate.com - adrianna.nine@sfgate.com Onward!

Our major expansion will see added coverage of national parks in Pacific Northwest, Southwest and Big Sky Country. We are looking to add three new contributing editors with a deep understanding of these regions and the ability to tell stories that matter to both people who live there and people who visit. The positions are for 20 hours a week with a salary range between $35,000-$40,000.

HELLO: SFGATE is embarking on a major national parks coverage expansion today, hiring journalists to cover the American West's most incredible outdoors spaces. We'll be reporting on national parks clusters in the: 🌲 PNW 🌵 Southwest 🗻 Big Sky Country The expansion will be helmed by award-winning national parks bureau chief Ashley Harrell and staffed by three new contributing editors with a deep understanding of the American West’s most loved parks and the ability to tell stories that matter to both people who live there and people who visit. The editors will not only tackle ambitious journalism about the parks, but they'll actually be based in the communities most tied to the ones they cover — we're not going to hire a CA journalist to cover Grand Canyon NP. We're going to hire someone in Arizona. That kind of thoughtful expansion is at the core of what we’re trying to do here. Since completely separating from the San Francisco Chronicle in 2019, SFGATE has become the largest news site on the entire West Coast, passing the LA Times in July despite having one-fifth the number of journalists on staff. We’ve expanded to cover the entire state over the past five and a half years, added a SoCal bureau (cc Farley Elliott) and hired a host of talented journalists based in Calif. news deserts hurting for more good journalism (plus had ZERO LAYOFFS during that entire span). What was an independent, 21-person outfit in 2019 will have almost tripled in 2025 — this year, we’ll have 60 journalists in 23 different cities and four different states, planting our journalism flag in a massive geographic footprint that, frankly, needs it. At a time when news media continues to shrink, America’s national parks are seeing record-breaking crowds. These pristine and imperiled places deserve a news organization that can keep up. Read way more on the expansion here: https://lnkd.in/gUbh7-fg And apply for one of the open roles here: https://lnkd.in/gCg8Rd4z
