A major change is coming for federally funded research in the U.S. On May 6, 2025, the new DURC/PEPP policy goes into effect, bringing with it an expanded oversight framework for Dual Use Research of Concern and Pathogens with Enhanced Pandemic Potential. This isn’t just another policy update. It redefines how research institutions assess, track, and report biological work, and applies to all federal funding agencies, not just the NIH. For PIs and biosafety officers, this means: - More pressure to assess DURC/PEPP risk at the proposal stage - New internal review requirements - Mandatory training, reporting, and documentation And yes, non-compliance may lead to suspension or loss of funding. If your institution hasn’t started preparing, now is the time.
