Schott is a BIPOC-led public fund that pools philanthropic funding and fuels racial and education justice movements
About us
Schott Foundation's mission is to develop and strengthen a broad-based and representative movement to achieve fully resourced, quality PreK-12 public education. At the Schott Foundation, we believe that quality public education is a mainstay of our democracy. It provides not only a route out of poverty, but also the possibility to transform young lives. This conviction drives Schott’s grantmaking strategy, which seeks to create healthy living and learning communities and ensure fairness, opportunity and access to high quality public schools for all children. Schott supports an “Opportunity to Learn” frame for understanding education policy. This framework recognizes that to truly close achievement gaps, our nation must address underlying “opportunity gaps” — the deep disparities that exist in access to quality educational resources, particularly for low-income students and students of color. Schott’s core belief is that well-resourced grassroots campaigns can lead to systemic change in the disparities poor children and children of color face in our nation’s schools. In helping to build these campaigns into a movement, Schott recognizes its pivotal role as both funder and advocate. Our operational strategy extends beyond simple grantmaking to offer our grantees and allied organizations additional supports in network building, policy analysis and communications. It is this combination of financial and operational supports that produces well-resourced campaigns for policy reform. Schott’s grantees wage these campaigns at the city, state and federal levels, often focusing on a particular issue within the broader landscape of education reform.

“You can’t lead the people if you don’t love the people... You can’t save the people unless you serve them.” Brandon L. McGee, Jr. of the Connecticut Equity Council shared these powerful words during Love is a House—a conversation hosted by Schott last month that brought together housing advocates from across the country to discuss the importance of community involvement in addressing housing issues. Please consider voting for our SOCAP workshop on durable grantmaking—an approach that supports grantees in building the self-determination and sustainability needed to gain power and drive the systemic change we all seek. After all, grantees are in it for the long haul—shouldn't we be too?
We’re excited to share that our session proposal — The Case for Durable Investments — is live on the SOCAP25 community voting page! In this session with UpTogether, Center for Effective Philanthropy and Schott Foundation for Public Education, we make the case for long-term, flexible, funding as a path to lasting impact and systemic change. Please take a moment to vote for our session here: https://lnkd.in/gkRhjMqh Voting closes April 13, so be sure to cast your vote and share with your networks. As I return home from Atlanta, I am filled with gratitude for ABFE and the community it represents. Harambee 2025 was another amazing experience that has left my spirits high and my heart full.
Here’s to the power of community and unity! A huge thank you to all our amazing attendees and valued members for your support and dedication! The energy we’ve experienced at Harambee have been truly inspiring. Harambee meaning "all pull together," perfectly reflects what we’re all about—coming together as one to drive change. Together, we continue to unite around our shared values of organizing, collaboration, and philanthropy, advancing our mission to promote effective and responsive philanthropy in Black communities. Thank you for being a part of this journey as we work toward a lasting impact and achieving racial equity for all. Let's continue to Harambee! #Harambee2025

Every student deserves a fair chance to succeed, but not all students have the same access to learning opportunities. Too often, success is shaped by factors beyond their control — funding, teacher quality, and even zip codes. That’s why NCYL partnered with the Schott Foundation to launch opportunitytolearn.info, a first-of-its-kind resource that analyzes education equity across 16 states. Explore the data. Advocate for change. Let’s ensure EVERY student has the opportunity to thrive.

Given the chaos happening at the federal level, we are thrilled to co-launch this dashboard as a way for states, cities, and districts to make change here and now to create equity and justice in public education.

The organizing work of Schott grantee partners Families and Friends of Louisiana's Incarcerated Children (FFLIC) and Step Up Louisiana was integral to the defeat of four proposed amendments in Louisiana last week, including one that would have expanded the ability to charge juveniles as adults. Voter turnout exceeded expectations, and the efforts of grassroots organizations continue to demonstrate the vital role community organizing plays in driving change at every level.

We had the honor of speaking with musician and entrepreneur LaRussell for last week’s Love is House webinar, where he shared what a Loving Community meant to him. LaRussell is a powerful example of how nothing can replace authentic time spent in community. Real relationships and meaningful advocacy always start at home — on your own block, in your own neighborhood — and build from there toward broader efforts like policy change and funding.
