Are synthetic ingredients always a bad thing? When we hear the word synthetic, we often think of something that is fake, plastic and not of the same ‘standard’ as pure and natural. There is often this notion that ‘natural’ is best, but is this always the case? Let’s look at Musk… We frequently hear about Musk as an ingredient in fragrances, but where does it come from? Natural musk is a substance with a very strong and persistent odor found in a gland located inside the body of the musk deer. An endangered animal that comes from #Tibet, #China and #Nepal. It is not only musk from deer, but all animals that secrete the desired substance, such as civets, muskrats or European beavers (for castoreum, a type of musk) amongst others. Natural musk in its primary state is dry, purplish almost black in color and soft to the touch. The practice of extracting these glands is cruel, often leading to the death of the animal. Although many have banned the use of natural musk it is unfortunately still seen as a luxury ingredient. However, many perfume companies, including us of course, are 'cruelty free' and use a synthetic ingredient created in laboratories. Synthetic musk is an aroma created by companies to emulate the scent of natural musk. Synthetic musk smells clean, soft and sweet.
