Apple, Samsung and Google introduced them in into smart phones & OS in 2013/2014... ...and in 2025 we are seeing the highest global phone theft statistics on record. So what is the trouble with “Kill Switches”? 3 major ones are coming to light: 1. They are likely to be hackable. In 2014 a Dutch/Moroccan hacking team found a way to bypass the iOS Activation Lock as it was then named. As we know, even if you wipe your computer’s hard drive it is still possible to recover that information if you know how. 2. We don’t know who manages the Kill Switch. Is it the carrier? Is it me via portal? Is it the phone company? At what level would data be wiped if the kill switch made the phone useless after being stolen? With Android being more Open Source would that make it more susceptible to being hacked? There are a lot of questions here surrounding what is a much more complex, multi security-layered issue than has been explained. If it were that easy to implement, wouldn’t phone manufacturers already have done it? 3. You still don’t get your phone back! This is the really big one! Would you not rather just have your phone back for you to carry on using? Having your phone stolen is a horrible experience, during and after the event. It makes you feel powerless and alone when you can’t call someone you know for help and it’s a huge headache to get set up with a new phone with all your previous apps/settings/notes/info. Not to mention it’s incredibly expensive! We cannot hope to cure phone theft but we can try to prevent it. Prevention is still better than cure!
