David Brenner, PhD, president and CEO of Sanford Burnham Prebys, outlines how recent policy changes and grant terminations from federal agencies threaten the foundation of U.S. biomedical research. While calls for innovation and growth are welcome, they’re being contradicted by drastic cuts that risk slowing scientific discoveries. Read more from Brenner’s perspective on why empirical evidence must guide our nation forward.

The Queer Scientists and Allies Symposium, or Qs and As on the Mesa, was held at Sanford Burnham Prebys on Friday, April 4, 2025. The event was developed to create community connections and highlight the work of LGBTQIA+ researchers on the Torrey Pines Mesa. Following a formal program, attendees enjoyed networking with each other and visiting tables sponsored by local organizations that promote engagement and belonging for queer scientists and allies. The symposium was hosted by Sanford Burnham Prebys and its Office of Workplace Engagement and Belonging, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies Pride Society, Queer Science Society, the Pride Alliance at Scripps Research and the La Jolla Institute for Immunology. David Brenner, president and CEO, weighs in on how the NIH’s recent grant terminations and policy changes could threaten the future of science in the United States. Hundreds of valuable research projects, already vetted and approved, have been canceled, including studies on HIV, vaccine development and public health. These cuts could undermine progress in fighting pandemics, chronic diseases and global health threats. #NIH #mRNA #HIV #publichealth #disease #medicalresearch #biomedicalresearch

A recent The New York Times story describes how new and changed federal policies pose long-term risk to science and the economic gains it creates. Highlighted in the article is the story of Hudson Freeze (Freeze Hud), PhD, director of the Sanford Children’s Health Research Center, who as an undergraduate student at Indiana University was involved in the discovery of heat-resistant microbes. Those microbes would prove critical to the development of #polymerasechainreaction (#PCR), a DNA replication tool that is now ubiquitous in genetic science and beyond. Hundreds of scientists from San Diego and across the United States gathered March 26-27, 2025, to discuss the latest advancements in #aging research. The NIH-funded San Diego Nathan Shock Center opened the two scientific meetings. Shanshan Yin, PhD, a postdoctoral associate at Sanford Burnham Prebys, presented an update on her research regarding #breastcancer and aging. At the La Jolla Aging Meeting, postdoctoral associate Kelly Yichen Li, PhD, gave a talk on her work with zombie-like #senescentcells that persist but no longer divide like most normal cells and Graduate student Tatiana Moreno detailed her studies regarding aging and the body’s cellular recycling system, a process called #autophagy. Postdoctoral associate Rouven Arnold, PhD, presented his work seeking to better understand how aging can lead to a loss of the unique #cellularidentity that allows cells to carry out specialized functions in different organs. 🔬 The #nuclei in our cells are miniature warehouses safeguarding the genetic blueprint for the body’s biologic machinery. As warehouses go, nuclei are more like libraries than bank vaults. Large groupings of more than 1,000 individual protein molecules called #nuclearporecomplexes (NPCs) are found on the dividing membrane, serving as gateways for materials and messages entering and exiting the nucleus. Cells dynamically adjust their amounts of NPCs like a retail store opening more or fewer checkout lines throughout the day. A new Sanford Burnham Prebys study shows that protein creation and disposal systems control the number of NPCs in cells. This finding may lead to new insights about #cancer and #neurodegeneration.
