Accurate Weather Data to Improve Shipping: a new interview from IMarEST about SailTimer's research on crowdsourced wind maps for ships offshore. https://lnkd.in/e8h_XTZG We compared the satellite weather forecast against 103,000 wind sensor measurments from ships. The satellite forecast for wind direction was found to have an average error of +/-35 degrees, compared to actual measurements. More details are in press for publication, but this interview shows how ships can reduce fuel costs and emissions with more accurate wind maps. About us
SailTimer made the first-ever sailboat wind sensor that could transmit to smartphones. The innovative SailTimer™ navigation app is the only product that accounts for a sailboat's tacking distances when calculating optimal routes. For chartplotter users, the SailTimer Air Link™ can receive wireless data and send it in on NMEA 0183 or 2000 wiring. With a growing population of worldwide users, our crowdsourcing platform allows users to share actual measurements for more reliable and accurate marine weather for everyone to navigate with.

How accurate should wind conditions be in the GRIB satellite marine weather forecast, for you to consider it reliable? You might expect that the GRIB forecast has 0 error (or should have). In our new White Paper, 103,000 wind measurements were compared to GRIB satellite forecasts for the same locations and times. The GRIB satellite forecast had an _average_ error of +/-35 degrees for wind direction. That's a 70-degree range of error! (Plus a wide standard deviation). For ships that are trying to use voyage optimization, crowdsourced measurements from other vessels up ahead are more reliable and accurate for reducing fuel costs and greenhouse gas emissions. More about this in our two new White Papers: https://lnkd.in/gbX6g3bg

SailTimer Inc. has just shipped 25 Air Links for a fleet of commercial work boats. The Air Link™ is a low-cost device that connects NMEA networks to smartphone apps and our cloud database. These ships operate from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes to the Arctic. They will be contributing real-time weather data to our wind zone display on the SailTimer™ app. The Air Links are also getting other operational data off the ships. Better weather data helps ships to save on fuel costs, reduce emissions and carbon taxes, and arrive in port on time. If you are interested in more accurate marine weather data from actual measurements instead of satellite forecasts, contact us at info@SailTimer.co #crowdsource #SailTimer #emissions #weather https://lnkd.in/giz_C6XY

SailTimer has developed software that scans our database of crowdsourced wind measurements from ships offshore, and compares the accuracy of forecasts in the same place and time. For wind direction in satellite weather forecasts, a mean error of 38 degrees is typical. SailTimer developed the first-ever sailboat wind sensor that could transmit to smartphones starting in 2011. If it had a measurement error of 38 degrees, that would not be acceptable. But this is the error level that ships have to navigate with today. Crowdsourced data from vessels up ahead can give ships better weather routing, to help reduce fuel costs and emissions. More about this on our updated website at https://lnkd.in/giz_C6XY

At SailTimer, we are working on a new transformation for ships offshore, from weather 'predicting' (based on satellite imaging) to actual measurments from other vessels. Better weather data = better routes = lower greennhouse gas emissions. SailTimer is proud to be the Member of the Week on the homepage of the Canadian Marine Industries & Shipbuilding Association (CMISA). https://lnkd.in/d7gFBNx6
