This #EarthDay, we are reflecting on the sustainable design strategies used in our Stewart Cannery Affordable Housing project in Santa Rosa. The design of the building incorporates locally sourced and/or recycled materials, such as the wood used in the community room and in the elevator lobby feature walls. See our Notebook post for more information about these feature walls: https://lnkd.in/ggfHb3Hi Additionally, 70% of the landscape design done by PGAdesign Landscape Architects incorporated native vegetation. The site was designed to restore and enhance the habitat for local fauna and pollinators, preserving native oak trees along the Santa Rosa Creek and providing critical habitat and shade there.

The Stewart Cannery Feature Walls: https://lnkd.in/ggfHb3Hi Our recently completed Stewart Cannery Affordable Housing project in Santa Rosa with The John Stewart Company gave us several new experiences, challenges, and opportunities for exciting collaboration. One such hurdle was the design and implementation of custom feature walls, intended for wayfinding throughout the building. The feature walls were a collaborative effort, designed by SSDP's Samantha Siliezar and Mimi Sullivan, AIA, manufactured by Formr Sasha P. and LightSource, and installed by Midstate Construction Corporation. Read our Notebook post on our website, authored by SSDP Designer Samantha Siliezar, to learn about the inspiration, artistry, innovation and hard work that went into this aspect of the project: https://lnkd.in/ggfHb3Hi

This Black History Month, it is crucially important to highlight the Black women who bring such diversity and innovation to the field of architecture and design. As of 2022, National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) had reported that only 2% of licensed architects working in the US were Black, and only 22% of those were Black women. The below article highlights 27 barrier-breaking architects and designers who are viewed as trailblazers for their work and representation in the field.

Yesterday, SSDP had our second annual cultural potluck lunch in recognition of National Racial Healing Day, which follows MLK Day every year. From kimchi fried rice to homemade pretzels, we had a wonderful time celebrating our team's diversity by exploring each person's cultural heritage and background through food.
