We're proud to announce that RWJBarnabas Health is expanding its partnership with the Princeton-based nonprofit Share My Meals across the health system to help feed more New Jersey families struggling with hunger. RWJBarnabas Health launched a pilot program last year at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset in which surplus meals from the cafeteria were donated to Share My Meals to help support local families experiencing food insecurity. The program yielded over 5,200 meals served, saved 3.25 tons of food, and avoided 29,300 pounds of carbon emissions in the first year. Through this relationship with Share My Meals, each participating health system hospital has identified local partner organizations – such as a food pantry, soup kitchen or other community-focused entity – to donate surplus meals to, ensuring that nutritious food reaches those in need. As part of our Social Impact and Community Investment initiatives, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton is donating surplus food from our Roma Bank Café to help support families in our community who are experiencing food insecurity. We are proud to be partnering with Share My Meals Inc., a non-profit organization based in Princeton, to help provide meals to families in need. The donated surplus of food will be picked up once a week and distributed by the program’s partner, HomeFront. In addition to Share My Meals, RWJUH Hamilton and Sodexo USA donate 150 freshly prepared, hot meals, five days a week to Mobile Meals of Hamilton Township to aid in providing adequate nutrition for the elderly and handicapped community members. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton would like to thank Elaine Griffin, a stage IIB colon cancer survivor, for sharing her personal story of resilience in a feature in the New York Post titled, “I got diagnosed with colon cancer at 44 — these were my 4 main symptoms,” during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. 💙💙 Elaine, an associate director of grants with the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers University, was only 44 years old when she was diagnosed in April 2024 by Meera Yogarajah, MD, Medical Oncologist, the Cancer Center at RWJUH Hamilton. Immediately following her diagnosis, she underwent a successful emergency laparoscopy with surgeon Charles Eisengart, MD, followed by chemotherapy at the Cancer Center. Read Elaine’s story here: https://lnkd.in/esJqNdZ3 Since her diagnosis, Elaine has made colon cancer awareness her mission. For the last 11 months, she’s leveraged Facebook to share the importance of screenings and, thanks to her efforts, 1,400 people have completed their colonoscopies, two having been diagnosed with unexpected colon and stomach cancer. Thank you, Elaine for championing such an important issue and for your advocacy! Early detection saves lives. This Patient Safety Awareness Week, we take a moment to reflect on the core of what we do every day: ensuring the safety, well-being and dignity of those we serve. This year's theme, “Curiosity Saves Patients,” invites us all to embrace curiosity, one of our organization's core values. The smallest observation, the simplest question, or a moment of pause can ultimately save lives. Together, we can make a difference. We thank our team members for your unwavering commitment to keep our patients – and each other – safe. #PSAW25 #PatientSafety #LetsBeHealthyTogether
