When division in our families and communities was reportedly growing, Rocky Mountain Public Media sought a different path. Through deep listening sessions, interviews with community members in diverse rural communities and those in the Front Rage, and conversations over a meal, we partnered with hyperlocal news organizations across Colorado to build bridges and trust through the Above the Noise Initiative. This Is a challenging time for journalism in so many ways, but the past three days at the Local News Summit convened by Lenfest Institute and Aspen Digital reminded me just how much innovation and deep community impact and connection is happening in places and organizations big and small all across our country. It was exciting to share some of our work at Rocky Mountain Public Media and I left inspired and grateful to work amongst such good people doing great work.

A lot of things are changing around us from day-to-day, but generations of Coloradans have counted on us to provide increasingly rare community-owned, operated and funded media for nearly 70 years. Let’s continue to work together to ensure public media remains a powerful tool for us all not just to see and hear each other, but to truly value each other as neighbors and friends.

This past year, we have embraced this continued transformation and are poised for a digital evolution that will help us to connect with you - our friends, supporters, and community partners, in new and more meaningful ways. 🤝 We are witnessing history, and we are meeting the moment to support democracy. Thank you to American Press Institute for highlighting the work of Rocky Mountain Public Media as one of five “bright spots” to bridge across political differences and connect people with trusted information. Thousands of Coloradans engaged in our Above the Noise initiative and most said they were more likely to trust and engage with their hyper-local news source as a result. Kudos to Kim Salvaggio and Amber Coté for their leadership and design of this work and to our dozens of partners including Colorado State University.

For the last six months, our brand leaders worked through a rigorous human-centered design process led by Corey Ford and tailored to our organization by Karla Hanlon, Kim Salvaggio, Nikki J. Jones and Kirby Witten-Smith. Our team engaged in community listening and user interviews with core and growth audiences, built and tested product strategies to meet explicit needs and opportunities, suggested innovative revenue strategies to grow and sustain this work, and presented to our board and staff. With our communities at the center of all we do, and brilliant servant leadership at all levels, we are proud of our team and their continuing work to center community at the heart of all we do. Kudos to Kim Salvaggio, Brad Haug, Wendy Allen, Ayana Contreras, Gabriela Resto-Montero, Alexis Kikoen and Kyle Cooke on a job extraordinarily well done! 👏👏👏👏

A message from Amanda Mountain, president & CEO of Rocky Mountain Public Media: "I'm so sad to share the news of Cynthia Hessin's passing. While she hasn't worked at RMPBS in many years, she was a fixture at RMPBS. Cynthia hosted a public affairs show that ran every Friday on RMPBS called Colorado State of Mind and she was a venerable journalist deeply respected in her field. Cynthia passed away on Friday after a battle with cancer. It's an honor to be even a small part of her legacy." https://lnkd.in/gxuHkjvW
