Smart response self-disinfectant antimicrobial nano-coatings based on a new range of smart antimicrobial nanoparticles.
About us
RELIANCE is a Research and Innovation Action project funded by the EU that aims to design and develop smart response self-disinfectant antimicrobial nano-coatings based on a new range of smart antimicrobial nanoparticles. These nanoparticles will consist of mesoporous silica nanoparticles with metallic copper in their structure, modified with biobased bioactive compounds, such as Antimicrobial Peptides (AMP’s) based on protein containing waste streams, and Essential Oils (EOs) coming from non-edible plants. The antibacterial action of these additives will be adjusted to the specific application as far as dosages and durability requirements are concerned.

🤓Growing innovative scientific knowledge 🎉 The first #openaccess scientifc publication of RELIANCE HE Project is a fact! University of Rome Tor Vergata partners have recently had their paper published in the Green Analytical Chemistry journal 👏 ⚗️The title of their impressive work is "An ecodesigned reagent-free paper-based electrochemical sensor modified with carbon black for the detection of essential oils". 🌿 In the era of sustainability, the use of natural compounds with antimicrobial action is the rational selection to avoid the release of pollutants into the environment. Among them, #essentialoils are characterized by reliable antimicrobial activity and their use is estimated to grow in the future, thus their detection is in demand in research 🔬 📌The paper reports on an electrochemical reagent-free paper-based device for the detection of essential oils, namely thymol, eugenol and carvacrol, by adding 5 µL of solution onto the electrode. Over a period of two busy days, we enaged in presentations, discussions, shared the challenges we stumbled upon during synthesis and upscaling processes and brainstormed on steps for overcoming them. 🎯Being just 18 months away from the end of the project, we also spent considerable time on dissemination and exploitation opportunities' planning so that we can ensure broad social and market acceptance of RELIANCE results.
