As we head into March and Women’s History Month, I’m grateful to have spent time reflecting with LeeAnn Shelton on my journey since graduating from Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management Kellogg School of Management - and sharing my optimism about where venture capital is heading. Sara Zulkosky and I founded Recast Capital with the mission to support rockstar emerging VC managers. We both saw a huge untapped opportunity to put capital in the hands of fund managers that come from atypical backgrounds relative to most in this industry. Through their unique lenses we could access startup and market opportunities not identified by others. Fast forward to the present day: we’re proud to have worked with 134 emerging managers from so many different backgrounds through the Recast Enablement and Accelerate programs. The impact is real: this diverse community of investors is raising capital, building firms, and backing the next generation of innovative startups. Still, there’s still plenty of work to do. Raising a fund remains disproportionately difficult for women, people of color, and those not brought up in wealth—a gap we’re committed to closing. Change is on the horizon. I’m constantly inspired by the network of women I have the pleasure of interacting with every single day. These leaders aren’t just asking for a seat at the table, they’re creating new tables together. Thank you LeeAnn for putting my story to paper and sharing it with the Kellogg community.
