  • Scaling up impact with JREDD+ Jurisdictional REDD+ (JREDD+) is a powerful nature-based climate solution that tackles deforestation and climate change at a large scale. 🌳 Led by governments, JREDD+ programs work across entire national or subnational jurisdictions to: ✅ Reduce deforestation and forest degradation ✅ Generate high-integrity carbon credits by reducing emissions and following rigorous standards like ART TREES ✅ Fund conservation efforts while supporting sustainable development JREDD+ helps protect ecosystems and drive climate action - while respecting the rights and priorities of Indigenous Peoples, Traditional and Local Communities. The Race to Belém is driving private sector finance 💰 towards safeguarding critical forests in Brazil. • 🌍 ⚡️ EARTH DAY - Did you know forests play a huge role in the global water cycle - from local to global scales? For example, the Amazon helps sustain rainfall 🌧️ over a huge area - affecting weather patterns across South America and beyond. This rainfall is critical for sustaining agriculture, supplying drinking water, and driving renewable energy generation. In Brazil, around 60% of the energy mix comes from hydropower. And hydropower needs consistent water flow to generate electricity. Standing forests 🌳 help keep that flow going. Ready to help protect Brazilian forests? • It’s 10-to-midnight for the Amazon and Brazilian forests. We are approaching the 🌳 Amazon Forest Tipping Point 🌳.  At the current rates of destruction, we only have this decade to act. Crossing this Tipping Point will create not only regional damage, but global climate impacts. The Race to Belém is a race ⏱️ to finance the protection of Brazilian forests at a scale and speed never seen before - before it's too late. • Real leaders don’t wait. They act. The private sector has the power – and the responsibility – to drive real climate action. Companies that make deforestation targets part of their comprehensive sustainability strategies are: ✅ Accelerating their journey to Net Zero. ✅ Mobilizing billions for protecting forests and critical ecosystems. ✅ Setting the standard for climate leadership. 🌿 Protecting the Amazon and Brazilian forests requires bold action. Business leaders need to step up now - for forests, for communities, and for a sustainable future. Who’s acting today? #RaceToBelem #ClimateLeaders #NetZero

It protects forests while funding conservation efforts and driving sustainable development. Here’s what JREDD+ programs can offer: ✅ Achieve large-scale impact ✅ Protect critical ecosystems and biodiversity ✅ Improve forest governance and enhance policies ✅ Develop and implement equitable benefit sharing mechanisms, working with stakeholders ✅ Prevent leakage by including entire jurisdictions in the accounting The Race to Belém mobilizes private sector finance towards JREDD+ programs in Brazil. Silvania, a $500 million nature and biodiversity investment vehicle backed by Swiss trading company Mercuria, initiated its first major campaign in conjunction with Conservation International and The Nature Conservancy, and it's called the Race to Belém. It hopes to raise $1.5 billion from the private sector ahead of #COP30 in Belém, Brazil, in November. It will sell jurisdictional reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, or JREDD+, credits. Additionally, Silvania has committed up to $100 million to jump-start the program by matching every tonne purchased by a Brazilian state with a dollar in upfront capital. "The consensus is that private sector engagement is now more critical than ever. The urgency to address climate challenges has only increased, and the Race to Belém highlights this by calling for transformative private investments," CEO Keith Tuffley told Reuters. https://lnkd.in/d4aCETGS

  • Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities protect a remarkable 80% of the world’s biodiversity. Despite their critical role, they receive less than 1% of global climate finance 💰. This disparity must be corrected. Protecting forests means safeguarding the people who are its stewards. Jurisdictional REDD+ (JREDD+) programs strive to achieve equitable climate finance while respecting the rights and priorities of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. This is done through comprehensive stakeholder engagement, Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC), and ongoing collaboration. JREDD+ programs aim to: ✅ Ensure fair and equitable benefit-sharing mechanisms. ✅ Clarify land rights and enhance tenure security to empower forest dwelling communities. ✅ Improve livelihoods through sustainable development initiatives, often including climate-resilient agriculture and other community-focused programs. • Spotlight on Tocantins.Tocantins is a state in Brazil, with: - A population of 1.5 million. - 17 million hectares of forest area. - Tocantins forests are composed of 91% Cerrado biome and 9% Amazon biome. Around ~30% of forest cover has been lost since 2000 (equivalent of ~1 billion tonnes of CO2e emissions) Tocantins state is already implementing a Jurisdictional REDD+ program in partnership with Silvania to protect forests and promote sustainable development while preserving the region’s biodiversity. This will be the first program to scale as a result of Race to Belém. To find out more - visit our website: https://racetobelem.earth/ #RaceToBelem #AmazonConservation #JREDD

  • ❓ Did you know? The Amazon rainforest and Brazilian forests are home to trees that can walk... Ok so, that's not entirely true! Meet the Walking Palm (Socratea exorrhiza) 🌱 - a tree that appears to 'walk' across the forest floor as it grows and shrinks its aerial roots. This is just one incredible species that makes up the forest foundation. There are countless more. The Race to Belém is about protecting the incredible biodiversity in the Amazon rainforest and other Brazilian forests - before it’s gone. Join the movement. Every tree counts. https://racetobelem.earth/ #RaceToBelem #AmazonRainforest #Biodiversity
