Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far! Our plans for the fund will include additional #deployments in our partner's on-site grounds where we'll test our latest version of the artificial root filtration device. Furthermore, PolyGone's team plans to continuously partake in #communityengagement programs through collaboration and cooperation with the local vicinities most affected by #microplasticpollution in waterways. We're excited to show everyone our plans and projects for the future!

An interdisciplinary green tech company designing the first portable and affordable microplastic removal device
About us
Problem Every year approximately 8 million tonnes of plastic enter our waterways, 80% of which gets transported via polluted rivers. Riverbourne debris consists of large and small plastic fragments. Smaller plastic fragments below 5 mm in diameter are called microplastics. They are rapidly becoming a global concern as they can easily be ingested by aquatic wildlife and humans, introducing potentially hazardous and carcinogenic chemicals into their diets or disrupting natural bodily functions. Additionally, due to their size, they are incredibly difficult to sequester from aquatic systems without significantly disrupting the ecosystem. With microplastic concentrations in rivers and drinking water on the rise, there is a critical need for new infrastructure to remove these harmful contaminants from our waterways. Solution: Our team has developed the world's first affordable, portable, and environmentally friendly microplastic sequestration device, the Plastic Hunter. The Plastic Hunter is a modular water treatment wetland pad that utilizes organic and artificial root networks as biofilters to passively entrap microplastics and is designed to work in rivers. Plant root fibers exude a gelatinous film that easily entraps and absorbs small river sediments like microplastics. Through the creation of dense networks of underwater plant roots, we aim to use our device to passively entrap microplastic sediments without disrupting the aquatic ecosystem.

Happy Earth Day! 🌎 Did you know that an estimated 10 to 40 metric tons of #microplastics enter the #environment each year, and 8 to 10 metric tons end up in our #oceans? Want to learn more about microplastic pollution and its effects on both the environment and human health? Visit our Microplastics Educational Pavilion at the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) to explore hands-on, interactive exhibits. Learn about microplastics in everyday items like cosmetics and their impact on wildlife up close. On April 27, 2025, ACUA is hosting its Annual Earth Day Festival for families and students! Enjoy engaging games, informative displays, and feel free to stop by our Microplastics Removal Pilot and Pavilion to learn how we are tackling this #global issue. 9 in 10... that's the estimate of humans exposed to microplastics, and it has adverse health and environmental effects. What's been done to address them? That's where Yidian Liu and PolyGone comes in. They are deploying a filtering system at water plants that binds to the microplastics that are floating on the water surface, and they have an incredibly high filtration rate and 90% cheaper than alternatives.
