Breaking the cycle of hunger
About us
Too many people across Massachusetts are worried about affording enough food. Project Bread works statewide to connect people and communities to programs that meet nutritional needs and alleviate household budgets. Our advocacy is driven by the real-time challenges of people experiencing food insecurity, so we can permanently break the cycle of hunger. - Provide immediate relief to those who are hungry today - Eradicate the systemic causes of hunger From community-based meal programs, to early childhood and school nutrition initiatives, to improved access to farm-to-table and local food resources, we approach hunger as a complex problem with multiple solutions that often work best in combination, and through cooperation and collaboration between communities and organizations.

Srikanth (Sri) Akkineni from Acton might only be in middle school, but he’s already making a significant impact in the fight against food insecurity. Sri runs his apparel business Joombi and donates earnings to mission-driven organizations, including Project Bread. “Many charities donate and help but what makes Project Bread interesting to me is the impact they make through legislative change,” Sri shares. “When I learned of how Project Bread helped push the free school lunches bill to pass, that was great! These values are what I believe in and what Joombi stands for — helping people, being resourceful, and giving back to the community.” Get the story: https://lnkd.in/emkrRFSz

Join The Commonwealth by April 15! The Commonwealth is a fundraising program that invites Project Bread's anti-hunger partners to use The Walk for Hunger as a platform to raise funds for their initiatives. We encourage any anti-hunger program to form a team for The Walk for Hunger and retain 60% of the funds you raise for your mission! We also welcome schools to raise money for their initiatives, including gardens, backpack programs, Summer Eats, school meal equipment, on-site pantries, and more. Last year, The Commonwealth teams raised over $250,000. Tag an organization or program in the comments or share this post to help spread the word! The USDA has canceled $3.3 million in food intended for delivery to Massachusetts food banks through The Emergency Food Assistance Program. Nearly $2.3 million, which equals around 105,000 cases of food, was designated for the Greater Boston Food Bank. In Massachusetts, one in five households struggles to put food on the table. Food banks, SNAP, and Farm to School grants face threats from the Trump administration. We're disappointed that our current administration continues to attack food assistance programs that support our most vulnerable populations. We'll continue to fight against these harmful policies and advocate for everyone in Massachusetts’ right to access and afford food with dignity. https://lnkd.in/e9_g8vXg

Last year's Walk for Hunger was a memorable experience for many, including Kathleen Chiong, a Boston Public School teacher and advocate for food security. Leading her team, Campassion — comprised of campers from grades 2-4 and their families — she helped raise over $2,400 for this vital cause. We're excited to see Team Campassion back at the Common this year, ready to make an impact once again! Kathleen's commitment extends beyond the Walk as she hosts donation drives for local food organizations like Charlestown’s Community Fridge and “Harvest on the Vine.” Her passion is also featured in her upcoming book, “Spotlight on Nonprofits: Massachusetts,” which includes a chapter on Project Bread. For those seeking inspiration for their own fundraising efforts, take a note from Kathleen: “It's nothing short of magical seeing my kids excited to engage with the community of Boston. The Walk for Hunger gives them the rare opportunity to make a difference alongside adults." Feeling inspired to fight hunger while having fun?
