PRIMED Project reposted this
📌 It’s time for another #BioPills post! This time featuring how rapeseed waste is being turned into bio-based adhesives within the Brilian project! ♻️ In the search for greener alternatives to fossil-based chemicals, CHIMAR HELLAS SA has tested rapeseed protein powders extracted from hot and cold-pressed rapeseed cake at Danish Technological Institute, as a renewable raw material in phenolic resins for wood-based panels. 🔬 Through five experimental rounds, CHIMAR evaluated phenol substitution levels of 20%, 40% and 50%. 🪵 These protein-based resins were used to produce pilot-scale plywood panels, which were tested for key properties such as shear strength and wood failure. ✅ The result? Even with 50% phenol replacement, the panels showed comparable performance to fossil-based formulations, demonstrating the potential of this bio-based solution for industrial applications. 💡 A clear example of how agri-food residues can unlock new cross-sectoral innovations in the bioeconomy!
