About us
The Port of Bellingham is a countywide independent special purpose government located in Whatcom County overseen by three nonpartisan elected commissioners. It was created by a countywide vote in 1920. From a beginning focused mainly on increasing shipping on the Bellingham waterfront, the port has expanded into a multi-purpose government with operations in Bellingham, Blaine and Sumas. The port supports economic development throughout Whatcom County. An independent county-wide government, the port operates all of Whatcom County’s transportation terminals, the two major marinas and a deep-draft marine terminal. The port also manages over 1,600 acres of public land with about 250 local business tenants. Port and tenant operations provide over 4,000 jobs in Whatcom County. One of the largest port operations is the Bellingham International Airport that annually serves about 500,000 passengers per year and offers numerous non-stop destinations with service provided by Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Airlines and Horizon Airlines. The port's marinas in Bellingham and Blaine provide moorage for 2,000 recreational and commercial boats and hundreds of people work for the numerous marine trades businesses that operate on port real estate. The port also operates the Bellingham Cruise Terminal, serving the Alaska State Ferry, private passenger ferries and charter vessels. Located nearby, the port's Fairhaven Transportation Station serves passengers on Amtrak and Greyhound.

Port of Bellingham's hardworking maintenance team has been planting native trees and shrubs near Slater Road, upholding mitigation efforts for Federal Aviation Administration required vegetation management. These plantings ensure safe operations at Bellingham International Airport (BLI) by maintaining the Runway Object Free Area, tower line-of-sight, and Airspace obstructions standards, while mitigating effects to the local ecosystem. It's all about keeping BLI safe, in compliance and being environmental stewards. For every tree removed for safety, another is planted to give back to the environment!

It’s time for another Harbor Tip from Tim! Did you know that a single gram of dog waste can contain 23 million fecal coliform bacteria, which can contaminate our waterways with pathogens leading to algal blooms, dead zones, and make our water unsafe for swimming and fishing? Pretty gross right? At our harbors we’ve installed several pet waste stations along the promenade and on docks to provide the resources to keep our bay healthy and thriving! Be sure to pick up pet waste immediately, tie the bag tight, and dispose of it in a nearby trashcan. Stay tuned for more harbor tips.

The I&J Waterway was buzzing last week! First, a pod of Orcas was caught on video swimming through the waterway, a sight that shows the fruits of cleanup and restoration. The Port of Bellingham’s efforts to remove contaminants and modernize maritime infrastructure are creating a healthier marine environment, making moments like this possible. Meanwhile, All American Marine, Inc celebrated the sendoff of a large vessel deck, built right in their Bellingham workshop by Whatcom County’s vibrant working waterfront . This revitalized waterway is now a hub for both marine life and industry, a true success story for our waterfront. Check out the Orca video if you haven’t already and come visit the I&J Waterway on Bellingham’s downtown waterfront to see progress happening. Have questions about the cleanup? We’re here to chat! Have you ever wondered what the Downtown Waterfront looked like before the Portal Container Village or Georgia-Pacific’s Pulp and Tissue Mill? The Whatcom Museum’s 2-Ply exhibition provides a photo timeline of Bellingham’s waterfront history, captured by various local photographers over the years. A pulp and tissue mill operated at the site from 1926 through 2007, serving as a vital economic driver and community cornerstone. When Georgia-Pacific decided to leave, the Port of Bellingham purchased the property to rehabilitate the site, restore its environmental health, and reimagine it as a space for public access and community use. Today, the Downtown Waterfront pays homage to the former industry and is a symbol of renewal, with opportunities for recreation, connection, and economic growth. Visit Old City Hall to explore, 2-Ply at the Whatcom Museum! Running until May 25th. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gy5B9itT
