In honor of the 2025 IAPD West Coast Charitable Golf Tournament held in Temecula, CA this week on Thursday, April 10, PLASKOLITE founder Donald G. Dunn also enjoyed a round of golf at "The Golf Club." He named himself an average player, learning the game with his dad and uncle during the depression, and also learning about good caddying that reflected and influenced his world view. Dunn believed golf can be a metaphor of life - "there are peaks and valleys of fortune and one must make the best of situations that are, either directly or indirectly, the player's own fault." Donald G. Dunn, founder of PLASKOLITE, was born in Pittsburgh in 1923. A decorated U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served as a member of the 10th Mountain Division in the Allied campaign of Northern Italy in 1945. In the final offensive in April 1945, Dunn led a platoon of men up to Hill 775 in the Apennine Mountains and was wounded by a sniper. For his heroism, he was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart. After the war, Donald continued his education at Wesleyan University and met his wife, Mary Elizabeth Altmaier, and married in the summer of 1948. A job opportunity appeared in Columbus, Ohio, but that opportunity fell through as fast as it came. According to his autobiography, Donald still desired to be an entrepreneur, and the following Monday he went to the Columbus Chamber of Commerce office wanting to invest in a business where he could also work, offering his savings of $9,000 to buy into a business. They told him of a small group who owned plastics extrusion machine and was looking for investors. This was the start of 'The Plaskolite Company', and Donald’s and the company's journey took off from that moment. PLASKOLITE is proud to donate two years in a row to support Camp Freedom, which provides outdoor healing adventures for individuals with disabilities, including veterans & first responders, their families, and gold star families. A total of 115 signs were donated using PLAYBOARD® Polycarve HDPE and are used to mark trails, hunting blinds, food plots, ponds, and lodges spanning over 2,300 acres and 25+ miles of trails. Polycarve was most suited for Camp Freedom due to its weatherability and ability to be custom machined to display the logo and sign title.
