Saving Kittens: A Transformative Workshop Experience with Hannah Shaw On March 29th, Planned PEThood had the incredible honor of hosting humane educator and kitten advocate Hannah Shaw, better known as the "Kitten Lady", for a day dedicated to saving the most vulnerable members of the feline community. Through two insightful workshops, attendees gained vital knowledge on best practices for kitten rescue, care, and fostering. Professional Training: Best Practices for Kitten-Focused Programs The first workshop was a 2.5-hour session designed for animal welfare professionals, including shelter staff, rescue organizations, and veterinary teams. This session covered best practices for kitten-focused programs, including: Kitten Diversion Strategies – Preventing at-risk kittens from entering shelters and guiding them toward safe, supportive environments. Foster Program Development – Strategies to recruit, train, and support foster caregivers to increase lifesaving efforts. On-Site Kitten Care – Essential techniques for providing proper medical and nutritional care to neonatal kittens. Innovative Approaches to Kitten Welfare – Exploring new and effective ways to enhance kitten survival rates and program success. By the end of the session, professionals left equipped with practical tools to implement within their organizations, ultimately helping more kittens thrive. Saving Kittens: Education and Empowerment for the Public The second workshop was open to fosters, volunteers, and members of the public interested in making a difference in the lives of kittens. This class provided essential information on: Kitten Development and Health Assessment – Understanding the physical and behavioral growth stages of kittens and how to monitor their health. Kitten Nutrition and Care – Including bottle feeding, kitten-led weaning, and proper feeding techniques for different age groups. Behavior and Socialization – Helping kittens become well-adjusted and adoptable through proper handling and social interaction. The Bigger Picture – Understanding the challenges impacting kittens and how individuals can play an active role in saving lives. This interactive session empowered attendees with the knowledge and confidence to step up as fosters, volunteers, and advocates for neonatal kittens. A Lifesaving Impact The knowledge and passion shared during these workshops will have a lasting impact on Planned PEThood and the greater animal welfare community. By equipping professionals and fosters with the tools to save more kittens, we are taking a significant step toward reducing euthanasia rates and giving more kittens a chance at a happy, healthy life. Planned PEThood extends a heartfelt thank you to Hannah Shaw for sharing her expertise and to all who attended and contributed to this transformative event. Let’s continue working together to save lives - one kitten at a time! 🐾 #KittenLady #PlannedPEThoodofGA #SavingKittens #FosterCare #AnimalRescue #NeonatalKittenCare

April is Pet First Aid Month: Essential Preparedness for Pet Owners Emergencies involving pets can happen without warning, and preparation is key to ensuring the best possible outcome. This Pet First Aid Month, pet owners should take proactive steps to equip themselves with the knowledge and resources necessary to safeguard their pet’s health and well-being. 1) How To Identify a Pet Medical Emergency Recognizing the signs of a medical emergency can save a pet’s life. Immediate veterinary attention may be required for symptoms such as uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing, lack of an appetite or an inability to urinate. 2) The Importance of a Pet First Aid Kit A well-prepared pet first aid kit can be invaluable in managing an emergency before professional veterinary care is available. Key components include a list of emergency veterinary clinics, a pet first aid guide, and up-to-date vaccination records. Additionally, items such as an extra leash, harness, and a muzzle can help safely manage an injured or distressed pet. For wound care, essential supplies include gauze pads, bandages, antiseptic wipes, adhesive tape, scissors, and clean towels. Pet owners should regularly check and replenish their kit. 3) Poison Prevention Many household foods and plants pose a significant risk to pets. Toxic foods include chocolate, xylitol, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, alcohol, and coffee. Additionally, plants such as lilies, tulips, daffodils, azaleas, and sago palms can be highly toxic. If ingestion of a toxic substance is suspected, immediate action is necessary—pet owners should contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661. 4) Choking Prevention and Emergency Response Choking is a serious but preventable hazard affecting thousands of pets each year. Small toys, bones, sticks, and household objects can pose a risk. Signs of choking include gagging, pawing at the mouth, excessive drooling, and difficulty breathing. To minimize risk, pet owners should choose appropriately sized toys, keep small objects out of reach, and supervise pets during playtime and meals. Obtaining training in pet CPR and first aid through organizations such as The Red Cross can also improve emergency response readiness. 5) The Critical Role of Vaccination Vaccination is a fundamental aspect of preventive veterinary care. Vaccines protect pets from life-threatening diseases, including rabies and distemper, while also reducing the risk of costly medical treatments. Many jurisdictions legally require certain vaccinations, even for indoor pets. (Pet owners based in Georgia could schedule vaccinations at Planned PEThood of Georgia.) Proactive preparedness can make all the difference in a pet emergency. Pet owners should stay informed, take preventive measures, and be ready to act when needed to protect the health and safety of their beloved pets.

The importance of microchipping 📣 This poor pup found himself lost after he had slipped out the house and disappeared. His family was worried and had been searching for him. Our staff found him outside our Duluth clinic all alone. Luckily, he was microchipped and we were able to contact his owner. Now he's reunited with his family and back at home! This reunion wouldn't have been possible without a microchip. Microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be reunited with their owner. If your pets aren't microchipped, book an appointment at Planned PEThood today!
