The recent Girl Goals report by Plan International, UNICEF and the UN Girls' Education Initiative (UNGEI) found that nearly 4 in 10 adolescent girls and young women globally do not complete upper secondary school. In Myanmar, women and children are lining up in the streets for help. The earthquake destroyed homes, hospitals and access roads — and the humanitarian needs are immense. 66% of maternal deaths already occurred in crisis zones before the disaster. Now, health care access is even more limited, and girls face growing risks of violence and exploitation. In Myanmar, families are still reeling after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake destroyed homes, schools and essential services. Plan International’s Global Humanitarian Director, Dr. Unni Krishnan, spoke to NPR about the urgent needs on the ground and how our teams are supporting children through this crisis. “Collapse of the communication systems, roads being damaged, everything is unfortunately working against the earthquake survivors, and time is running out for them,” said Dr. Krishnan. Play can be a powerful tool for healing for children. As part of Plan International's emergency relief project for displaced families in Gaza, implemented by our local partners Abdel-Safi Community Health Association and Taawon, your support is providing play-based activities for children in the Deir al-Balah area, which has been hosting displaced families for more than a year.
