Today, Pinterest is introducing labels for image Pins that are generated or modified using GenAI. We’re also testing new tools for our users to manage their experience with GenAI content.
This is a direct response to what we’re hearing loud and clear from our users: they want to be able to make more informed choices about the content they see. When people come to Pinterest, we want them to encounter quality content that makes their unique journey of personalized visual discovery better – and we believe that GenAI, when thoughtfully implemented, can contribute to more creativity, inspiration, and action for our users.
Giving users more transparency and control of the content they see is an important part of that. Check out more about what we’re doing here: https://lnkd.in/ecGG33p4
The title of Bill Ready's op-ed in TIME says it all, "It's time to keep phones out of classrooms." Across the country, the nonstop buzzing, pinging and chiming from smartphones and the apps on them are competing with teachers and classmates for student attention.
With the pull of phone screens and social media so strong, tech companies need to work with policymakers, teachers, parents and students so that in the classroom, young people are learning and growing -- not clicking and scrolling. At Pinterest, we're proud to do our part by supporting phone-free school policies and prioritizing intention, not attention.

This year, Pinterest became the first major tech company to call for states and school districts to adopt phone-free school policies to limit the distraction of smartphones and apps in classrooms. We were crystal clear: we won’t just talk the talk, but we'll walk the walk with real actions to support those policies. Today, I’m proud to announce Pinterest is taking important steps to follow through on that vision:
- First, we are launching an experimental in-app prompt on Pinterest that will display during school hours to minors, encouraging them to close Pinterest and providing a link to pause device notifications across the phone so students can focus on class.
- And second, we're implementing a $1 million partnership with the ISTE to support school districts across the country with digital citizenship and well-being programs.
This comes on top of my continuing engagement with state governors, policymakers and other leaders. We have the chance to empower a bright new generation of young people to become responsible digital citizens, and I hope tech companies will join Pinterest in backing phone-free school policies and come to the table with solutions.

Meet Lisa S., Sr. Workplace Operations Specialist and Impact Ambassador for Mexico City 🌱🌎 In celebration of Earth Month, we’re introducing our global Impact Ambassadors who help us organize volunteer work within our local Pinterest communities.
“Together, we can inspire even more people to engage with and contribute to our community. My goal is to initiate and participate in meaningful projects that not only support those in need but also foster a stronger sense of community and connection among us all.”

When we at Pinterest call for phone-free schools, our vision doesn't end there.
Because it’s not just about what we prevent when we get phones out of the classroom—the constant notifications, the distraction from learning, the pressures on mental health.
It's about what we make *possible*.
It's about the student who thinks, "Maybe physics is interesting after all" because the science lesson they're now paying attention to sparks their curiosity about deep space.
It's about the child who decides to connect with a new classmate on the playground because they actually notice them looking uncertain.
Or the one who decides to join a student club because they no longer have the lure of scrolling a social feed during free period instead.
We want to help educators (re)create this environment, which is why our new on-platform prompt on Pinterest encourages students to turn off their phone notifications during school hours.
It’s also about the young people who'll develop lifelong critical thinking habits to help them recognize potential misinformation or a deeper awareness of how their online actions impact others because of our $1 million partnership with ISTE to build digital citizenship and wellbeing programs in school districts across the United States.
We’d love you with us. Speak up in your district about establishing phone-free schools to help young people experience more of the possibilities around them.
This year, we launched a global volunteer initiative activating Impact Ambassadors, regional leads who will support planning and execution of volunteer work within local communities. During Earth Month, we had the opportunity to catch up with three Impact Ambassadors to learn about their passion for giving back and their drive to take on this new role.
First up, meet Myriah Towner, Content Programming Manager and Impact Ambassador for Atlanta, Georgia. 🌱🌎 https://lnkd.in/dVjgWfuc
