  • In 2024, Pierce County Human Services helped make 622 affordable housing units available, with more than 3,000 additional units currently in development. This progress was made possible in part by the Maureen Howard Affordable Housing Act—a one-tenth of one percent sales tax approved by the Pierce County Council in 2023 to fund affordable housing and related services. Expected to generate approximately $20 million annually, this funding supports housing projects and services for veterans, seniors, people with disabilities, and individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness. It will help build and preserve 600 to 800 affordable housing units each year, addressing the urgent need for safe, stable housing in Pierce County. Pierce County Human Services is now accepting proposals for $12.2 million in funding to support the acquisition, rehabilitation, or new construction of affordable housing in Pierce County, outside the City of Tacoma. This investment - made possible by the Maureen Howard Affordable Housing Act - will help create more safe, stable, and affordable homes for our community. Interested organizations must apply online by May 12 at 2 p.m. by visiting https://bit.ly/4233VRK. The sales tax from the Maureen Howard Affordable Housing Act has generated over $26 million since collection began in July 2023, helping fund 741 affordable units across Pierce County. Some of these units will be at Viridian Grove, a new 98-unit housing development in South Tacoma that will provide long-term affordable homes for low and very low-income households. We celebrated with partners at a groundbreaking last week and look forward to working with the community to tackle our housing crisis and ensure more families have access to stable, affordable homes.
