Rare earths are essential to nearly every modern technology: defense systems, EVs, medical devices, and more. Right now, China controls over 97% of the world’s rare earth processing capacity. The key area that is a gap: Metallization—the critical step of turning rare earth oxides into usable metal. It’s the part of the supply chain where China holds the most control—and the exact capability we’ve been building domestically at Phoenix Tailings. This moment highlights why rebuilding this capability in the U.S. is very urgent. China just responded to new U.S. tariffs by restricting exports of rare earths.   They’ve announced export controls on rare earth materials crucial to high-performance permanent magnets, escalating the ongoing geopolitical chess match where critical minerals are a key bargaining chip.   For those of us working in rare earth refining here in the U.S., this is more than just a headline — it’s a wake-up call.   This isn’t just about trade. It’s about control.   Today, China refines over 90% of the world’s rare earths, and now it’s making it harder for other nations to access the raw materials, expertise and equipment needed to produce these materials and downstream technologies. The ripple effects? Global. Industries like EVs, defense capabilities, drones, data centers and consumer electronics all rely on these magnets.   This move reinforces what we’ve known all along: The future of advance manufacturing, dual-use and energy can’t be built on unstable ground. If we want to lead in the 21st-century economy, we need to own our supply chains — from the mine (or tailings...) to the magnet.   The U.S. has the talent, the resources, and now — more than ever — the motivation to get this right.
